Hafiz Mammadov closes in on takeover

Azerbaijani businessman Hafiz Mammadov is close to completing a takeover of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Mammadov, the founder and chairman of the Baghlan Group, owns Azerbaijan side FC Baku and French Ligue One club Lens. - view external link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27680392)

His main ambition is for the Azerbaijan national side to be competitive.

He invests in European teams and brings young Azerbaijani hopefuls to the teams which have benefited from his investment, in hope that the clubs can assist in developing them.

He has previously invested in Athletico Madrid and Porto.

He'll assist with Wednesday's debt, but they shouldn't expect him to spend big on their squad.

Undoubtedly a rich man. Made his money in the murky world of oil and Azerbaijan government contracts.

His first club, FC Baku, once hired a reserve team manager based on their prowess on Football Manager.

You'll recognise the "Azerbaijan Land of Fire" shirt sponsorship. - view external link (uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/world-of-sport/student-lands-job-running-football-team-thanks-football-140446068.html)

If this is the Hafiz Mammadov, the Azerbaijani billionaire, then within a season or two the Owls could be competing with Chelsea and Man City in the big spending stakes

However, if this is the Hafiz Mammadov who has a kebab stall in Castle Market, then perhaps not.

Deal confirmed by the club. Mammadov to take full control following ratification from the league.

Find it hard to get excited about the comings and goings at Sheffield 6

They would sell their grannys if it suited them.

Political correctness will stifle the real thoughts of the piggie fans though.

16m, out of what, over 1bn, and that was negotiated by the CO-OP bank to get out of Football.
How many Local buisnesses went into financial difficulties be cause of some accountancy skulduggery by, the then, owners of Rotherham United.

matt i say this all the time but it never sinks in :(

clubs go up and down and dependent on who takes over (chairmen/owners) depends on how long you stay down :s sometimes decades rather than years :/

think of us whacking chelsea 10 1 and look at them now :s

if clubs never went down the founding members would still be in the prem league (1st division) ie accy stanley, nottscounty, preston.

dreaming of going up is what makes football what it is .. in order to do that clubs must go down ! and that means 3 every year out the prem :)

will we ever get there ? if only for one year ? why not wimbledon did :) live the dream .. it does no
