View Full Version : Most memorable missed signings

16-08-2014, 06:31 PM
During the last few weeks we have chased and had no success with our key targets (yet) which got me thinking seriously about which players have almost signed who could have made an impact but we missed them.

Mine is David Reeves - I remember the collection buckets for contributions to sign him after a great loan spell. Never came, big loss for us at the time and don't know what happened to the money!

Who would be yours???

No collection buckets. There were golden turnstiles where you could choose to pay double.

16-08-2014, 06:38 PM
Tony there were collection buckets.

Must have been hustled then because guys outside the beehole had buckets. Even more peeved now.

16-08-2014, 06:41 PM
I'm with you bandit.

16-08-2014, 06:43 PM
Peter Crouch!

16-08-2014, 06:53 PM
I put my pocket money in a bucket for Reeves.

16-08-2014, 06:54 PM
wasn't Crouch lost due to the riots and his girl not wanting to move here because of them?

16-08-2014, 07:10 PM
You paid double at the turnstile for Reeves.

As for that Crouch story - it is simply not true. He opted for Portsmouth because, in his words, they showed more ambition.

David Johnson.
Damn ITV Digital collapse. >:(

(Hoping he wouldn't have had the same injury problems if he joined us)

16-08-2014, 07:11 PM
Riots were reported to be a factor but remember that ITV digital went bust (leaving us skint) and Portsmouth started spending other people's money so were effectively able to poach Crouch with stolen money.

Could anyone confirm whether we were in for Matt Taylor at the time too?

I heard rumours Stan had him lined up until the ITV Digital money disappeared?

Tony Woodcock, I think, was on the verge of signing for the Clarets.

Michael Essien:

According to Flood. Whilst he was training with us, we had a maximum expenses limit for youth team players of 50(?). Despite pleas, the directors were unwilling to exceed it.

Got to be John Aldridge from Newport County

Agree with CT I didn't see any buckets for Reeves it was a specially marked golden gate turnstyle and myself to my eternal chagrin went through it. This in part, is why I NEVER WILL trust a BFC board as long as I live.

To settle the Reeves bucket confusion. Although I was only a kid I remember it was probably double on the gate. However once through the turnstiles there were buckets for any extra contributions. I remember my old man putting some extra hard earned cash in to sign the goal machine as he thought it was well worth it. Where did the loot go? Probably an extra couple of pints for the father.

OGS - at least twice per season for about 6 years running.

Despite being seen in he club shop and at the training ground, we never did get his signature

16-08-2014, 08:16 PM
Mark Patterson

16-08-2014, 08:19 PM
Nicky Walker gutted that we could not get him after his loan expired

16-08-2014, 08:27 PM
I sooo wish Remco van der Schaaf was a memorable missed signing.

If only Cardiff stole him at the last minute from us..

At an Accy Clarets meeting the late, great Brian Miller said, "He regretted missing Danny Wilson in the 1982/83 season as Tommy Cassidy's knees were buggered"

For me, it was Rick Holden who was playing for our reserves in the 4th division days but for some reason we never signed him.

16-08-2014, 10:22 PM
Brian Robson !

17-08-2014, 06:51 AM
Nicky Walker... i forgot about him great for us which reminded me also about Andy Marriot

17-08-2014, 07:54 AM
Seamus Coleman

17-08-2014, 08:12 AM
Gerry Creaney!

17-08-2014, 08:24 AM
David Nugent, went to PNE instead and they made about 6m on him.

17-08-2014, 08:58 AM
Jack Wiltshire
Only a loan, but didn't Coyle divert his loan from Arsenal when he jumped ship?

17-08-2014, 01:55 PM
Warksclaret beat me to it with Seamus Coleman who we had in on trial

17-08-2014, 03:11 PM
Jack Wilshere is a good one. I'm certain he was on his way had Coyle not sold us out.

17-08-2014, 03:58 PM
Shotton from Stoke a couple of years ago,the current situation with Dawson has all the repeat hallmarks

17-08-2014, 05:14 PM
david reeves was the one i thought of first too. i doubt we've missed any more than other clubs have.

He don't play for yo

Fretters I second Gerry Creaney. Built more like a milkman than a footballer (skin tight XXL shorts) but he could bang goals in!
