View Full Version : Downfall

Just watched it. (BBC 4). Not seen it for ages. I felt quite claustrophobic in my own front room witnessing those final dramatic hours played out in the Reichsbunker. I sat absolutely hypnotised by it for the full two and a half hours. Never moved out of my chair.
Bruno Ganz's performance as Hitler is chillingly realistic and gripping.
If you have never seen this film - other than the spoof extracts on youtube etc., (e.g.Hitler's reaction to " etc.), watch it on catch-up. The fact that it is in German with subtitles is no obstacle to your "enjoyment".

Brilliant film, seen it a couple of times and does not cease to intrigue.

If any of you are interested in gripping recounts and reviews of WWI and WW2, I can seriously recommend the books of Sebastian Haffner. His book on WW2 shows how agonisingly close Germany was to victory in 1941, only to be undone by a number of reckless decisions by Hitler.

I watched Conspiracy last week, about 10 years after it came out. That's a good film too if you like your lessons from history.

Excellent film,it's films like this that make me feel sorry for the 'I can't watch subtitled movies' types

For some reason I've never seen it but I recorded it last night so will watch it later.

An excellent film. I've only ever seen it with Czech subtitles, so will give it another watch over the weekend.

Conspiracy is another great film, but intensely frightening in its portrayal of a bunch of bureaucrats planning genocide over a nice lunch.

"The fact that it is in German with subtitles is no obstacle to your "enjoyment"."

Watched it last night and I thought it was even better for being in German with the subtitles. As I'd said earlier in the thread, I'd not seen the film before but once it had started I just had to watch it the whole way through. Outstanding, and agree with the comments on the actor who played Hitler.

Totally agree Tony, but some people just won't watch foreign language films that are subtitled.
When it is a subtitled film you have to give the film more concentration. This, as you correctly say, added to the intensity of the experience.
(No scanning developments on Clarets Mad whilst watching!)

the german language and subtitles ruin this film.

much better to have a gang of hollywood stars playing germans with american accents like tom cruise in valkyrie.

Sadly Quoon, there will be many who would take your post seriously and hold that view. It's all about celebrities and easy, comfortable viewing for some.

You are spot on about the level of concentration required when you have to read the subtitles. I don't think we'd got very far into the film when I realised my German wasn't good enough without them (about 10 seconds in I suspect).

I really did think it made it that much more authentic and added so much to the film.

Brilliant post quoon

Could have been worse, it could have been 'dubbed'.

My god how bad are foreign films when they've been dubbed? :/
