Back in my school days (St Christophers Accy) Simon Garner visited the school to give us a special guest games lesson. He was teaching the kids half volleys and at one point told us to continue praticing alone for 10 minutes whilst he had to go and make a phone call.

As soon as he was out of sight we all nipped off for a cheeky cigy and caught an embarrassed Garner p u f fing away on a cheeky cigy himself.

There was a situation of 'we won't tell the teachers if you don't'

You probably won't want to hear this but he was actually a really sound bloke. :D

Apparently quite a few in recent years at Burnley, certainly within the last 3 yr.

Didn't Brian Easton and Frank Sinclair?

Ex Forest winger/legend John Robertson.

Socrates was a heavy smoker (the ex Brazilian player not the Claretsmad poster).

Okay , Frank may have got away with it,
But Stan,..On Tv..What was he thinking !!

I used to wait outside Turf Moor in the 60s for the players to grab autographs during my lunch break from school and as soon as Brian O'Neil and Gordon Harris got out one of them would offer the other TWO cigarettes.

I read somewhere that Bobby Charlton enjoyed the odd smoke.

05-12-2014, 11:54 PM
There is a good black and white photo somewhere of Socrates sat on the sidelines of some back of beyond amateur league English team with a huge trenchcoat on and his shorts with a fag in his hand.
Charlton did smoke , you're right.

Zico, Eder, and Mario Kempes smoked to excess.
I think that when Cruyff did his famous turn, there was a **** of smoke wafting about behind him on the pitch. Cruyff was on about 50 a day in his prime. Seems ridiculous, but true.

A friend of mine went to Old Trafford in the 60's and stood next to the tunnel which in those days was on the centre line and without the covers you get today. Nobby Stiles wandered out after half time and stamped out his dog end before getting back on the pitch

Worked at a hotel in Gisburn many years ago & Spurs were staying there the night before they played Rovers. At around 11p.m I was called to David Ginola's room to deliver room service. When I entered the room Ginola & a Italian player called Nicola Berti were both smoking, on there room service list was 40 cigarettes

I remember going to a reserve game at Burnley in the mid-sixties. We were just kicking off at the beginning of the second half and Sammy Todd flicked his fag to the touchline after taking a last drag.

Jimmy Greaves ;D

There was at least 6 first teamers having fags at the End of season awards party at isa bar or whatever it's called now.

Probably occasional smokers with a drink.

Gazza was on a documentary during his time in China and was chain smoking during training.

06-12-2014, 08:20 PM
George Best didn't smoke...he hated it

06-12-2014, 08:27 PM
Berbatov, unsurprisingly.

06-12-2014, 09:06 PM
Some of our players on show today do. I'm not sure about during the season, but certainly when on holiday

06-12-2014, 09:26 PM
I remember catching Clark Carlisle round the back of the portacabins at Gawthorpe with a protective boot on his foot having a fag. I got told to be quite and not tell the gaffer. I think it was Coyle at that point.

07-12-2014, 11:14 AM
I remember reading an interview with Vialli where he said that while the drinking culture in English football made Italian players aghast, English players would wince at the number of Italian players who smoked.

07-12-2014, 01:26 PM
Peter Crouch

Pilkington in the 60's and Ronnie Jepson. John Robertson for Forest.
