Some might think it will be good for the club. Interesting to see if they improve without him as some say.

But, where does he rank with Liverpool all time greats? Would he in their all time Xl?

Yes one of the all time greats no doubt, but his presence / status is now holding them back.

Definitely on a list of 5 all time Liverpool players for me.

Also have to agree that it's the right time for him to move on.

It's widely reported that he currently earns 140k a week.

Liverpool have to spend that on a marquee signing. Something they should have done in the summer.

Less bargaining power now, when you look at their league position.

The best Liverpool player of his generation but compared against mainly very average players. Liverpool didn't win a league title with him or qualify for the Champions League every season, look at the critics Arsene Wenger has and he's achieved constant Champions League qualification. His slip last season against Chelsea was costly but he's like teflon with Liverpool fans and the media. Nobody mentions just before that slip against Chelsea he failed to control a easy pass. For England at the last World Cup against Uraguay the 1st goal came from a Gerrard missed tackle and the 2nd from his flick on. If that had been any other player the media would have murdered them. There's others like in the Euros playing Henry clean through with 5 mins left at nil nil or diving against minnows to try and win penalties.

I'm not trying to slag him off and wish we could discover the next Steven Gerrard in our youth acadamy. Just balancing what all the ex pros are saying about greatest Liverpool player

140k doesn't get you a marquee signing these days. Di Maria is on 350k as a comparison (apparently).

As to Gerrard...I genuinely don't get it.

He had 2 or 3 years in about 2005-07 when he was the business but that's about it at the very highest level for me.

Put it this way, if he'd been Belgian, would he have been in your top 5 Liverpool players ever? I suspect not...I suspect he'd have been a pretty decent Top 5 or 6 Premier League player...(a decent Fellaini or a poor Hazard, for example).

I'd not class him above any of the 70s & 80s team. Players like Dalglish, Hansen, La

No mention of Thatcher in this thread...:?

Millmoorlane:

Nah, not all of them.

Dalglish, Hansen and Souness, Rush could be in the top 5 (my lifetime).

With Gerrard it's the longevity and the fact he hasn't had the best players of his era in the same team.

Others have given us flashes ie. Torres, Barnes, Beardsley, Heighway etc.

The best footballer I've seen in a Liverpool shirt is Suarez (and I thought I'd go to my grave saying it was Dalglish) but he's not a great for obvious reasons. Not least because he was only there for 3 years.

You'd have to have seen him regularly in the flesh, to realise how good Gerrard was/is.

That's why he's revered on Merseyside.

A terrific player, won cup finals for Liverpool including the champions league with his efforts.

Been a pleasure to watch throughout his career with Liverpool.

Like a few others, disappointed at International level.

Can see him doing something very similar to Lampard, signing for a side in the US but ending up on loan @ chelsea or the like.

As said above, a bloody great player!!!

There is now.

And, of course, the milk snatchers answer to the hooligan problem was to want to ban fans from all grounds. When that idea didnt get off the ground it was her government that put the fences up (and all know what happened at Hillsborough).

Of course you are right Walt, this must have tipped Gerrard over the edge, and prompted his decision to move.

Most of us will remember the Millers at Anfield in 2001 when the home team was reduced to 10 men and a young Gerrard came on as a sub. Needless to say he made it look like we had 10 men and they had 12. Admittedly we weren't the toughest opposition and playing with a dodgy keeper in front of the Kop was always going to be difficult.

I don't get how people can compare Dalglish with 3 European Cups and 6 League titles to 1 Champions League medal is beyond me. I also think Frank Lampard doesn't get the credit he deserves. In the same era he's 60 Premier League goals ahead. I don't remember the BBC grinding to a halt when he signed for a MLS team. People talk about Gerrard playing with poor players but they have nearly all been internationals including Torres and Saurez at or near their peaks.

UTM!

An excellent player who can hold his head high when he leaves Anfield...

How many players stay as long as he has at one club... a very rare breed indeed these days...

Will always remember the 3-0 fight back in Istanbul against Milan to clinch the European Cup...now that's a real Captain for you...

Make a Liverpool 11 all time great? ...he'd walk it...
