Burnley took a big step closer to Wembley on 8th March 1988 with a dramatic penalty shoot out win against Halifax in the Northern semi-final of the Sherpa Van Trophy.

We'd beaten to reach this stage and were favourites to beat Halifax with home advantage, but it ended 0-0 after 120 minutes and went to penalties. Often goalkeepers can be heroes in such a shoot out and so it proved when Halifax's former Manchester United goalkeeper Paddy Roche missed a penalty to see the Clarets through 5-3 and a two legged Northern final against Preston who were, at the time, a division higher than us.

"He shot, he missed, we went to Wemb-er-lee, Paddy Roche, Paddy Roche."

We've played four league games and one FA Cup tie since on this date; the cup tie at Arsenal in 2009 when we fell to a 3-0 defeat. However, we've won two and drawn two of the league games.
