View Full Version : Twice we go within 90 minutes of Wembley

Looking back at the games Burnley have played on 10th March over the years highlights two away games when the results left us potentially within 90 minutes of Wembley.

The first of these two games was in the 6th round of the FA Cup in 1962 when we travelled to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United. It was an exciting day for me as it was the first away game I'd seen in the cups and not only that it proved to be the first time I ever saw Burnley win away in any competition.

Ray Pointer scored the only goal early in the second half against a United team that were effectively down to ten men due to a first half injury picked up by Gerry Summers. As was customary then, with no substitutes, he went on to the wing as a passenger.

I've other recollections from the day. Gales in Sheffield that week had blown down one of the floodlight pylons (the one in the corner that is now to the left of the away end) and the fog was so bad on the return journey that it seemed to take forever.
