I wonder how this would be viewed in 2015 but 54 years ago today, Burnley decided to rest 10 of the 11 members of the first team for a home game against Chelsea. Four days later we were to play Hamburg in the European Cup and we were also just one week away from the FA Cup semi-final against Spurs at Villa Park.

I've linked the story of the game below and what a game it was, ending 4-4 with Gordon Harris and Andy Lochhead both scoring twice for the Clarets and both Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Tambling doing likewise for Chelsea.

The Football League hit Burnley with a fine of 1,000 guineas but it was a superb display from the second string which was so close to ending with a victory. The game gave both Jim Furnell and Billy Marshall their last first team games for the club. Furnell, a good goalkeeper, had to move on to lesser clubs Liverpool and Arsenal to get games.

I've seen us hit four on two other occasions on 11th March. The next came in 1978 as Burnley were mounting an unlikely cha

I can still see where I was stood with my dad on the top of the Bee Hole End for that Chelsea game. Incredibly, there wasn't a stage in the game where I thought we wouldn't win and that was with Jimmy Greaves in the opposition team. Turned out to be a very disappointing week but I think I might settle for that now.

I live the astonishing match with 10 reserve players playing for Burnley and still ending in a 8 - goal thriller .In the absence of radios and televisions ,usually after school ,i hastened to buy an evening newspaper to know the result of the said match .British newspapers said that at that time Burnley had too many irons in the fire .Unluckily they did not got any silverware although Burnley were the greatest team in UK .
