View Full Version : Fish Finger Butties

11-03-2015, 02:42 PM
A couple of posters are having a bit of a ding dong on another thread but in there somewhere somebody mentioned FFBs, worthy of a thread of it's own.

Is there honestly anything better to eat?

11-03-2015, 02:43 PM
I've never had a fish finger in my life, let alone on a butty.

11-03-2015, 02:48 PM
Do you like to put fish sticks into your mouth?

11-03-2015, 03:06 PM
Whatever happened to Captain Birdseye?

11-03-2015, 03:13 PM
Then CT...you haven't lived

"Whatever happened to Captain Birdseye?"

Operation Yewtree.

II love fishy fingers ,can't get enough of them.

11-03-2015, 03:30 PM
Fish fingers didn't exist when I was a kid and I've never had any

11-03-2015, 03:32 PM
I'm the same age as you and fishy fingers did exist as a kid. I had plenty

11-03-2015, 03:45 PM
Just how old is CT? Fish fingers were around when I was a child and I'm a bit older than he is - or so I always thought :)

11-03-2015, 04:00 PM
"Just how old is CT?"

63 spades but I don't ever recall seeing fish fingers when I was a kid and I have definitely never eaten one.

I've been to weddings, where during the evening reception, fish finger butties have been served!

Even some restaurants offer a "posh fish finger sandwich" - three or four fish fingers, on fancy bloomer bread, with chunky chips, a bit of salad and a dollop of ketchup...and they charge 6.95 for it, despite costing about 1.00 (and that's being generous!) to make!

There's good profit in a fish finger!

11-03-2015, 04:15 PM
You can't beat a fish finger butty with either a dab of Mayo, or Tartar sauce!

Ketchup is acceptable, but brown sauce is a definite no no!

11-03-2015, 04:18 PM
how bizarre i actually had one today for the first time in years...the question is shallow fry - grill or bake

The Bedlington Terrier

With a good dash of tabasco...yummie!

11-03-2015, 04:31 PM
Egg, chips, baked beans, spam and fish fingers

Fish fingers, chips, baked beans and fish fingers

Spam, fish fingers, chips, egg and fish fingers

Fish fingers, baked beans, fish fingers, egg and fish fingers.

Fish fingers, chips, fish fingers and fish fingers

11-03-2015, 04:33 PM
"You can't beat a fish finger butty with either a dab of Mayo, or Tartar sauce!"

I can't be doing with tartar sauce

11-03-2015, 04:44 PM
"I can't be doing with tartar sauce"

Is that because You are bitter enough ? :)

11-03-2015, 04:50 PM
Fish fingers and garden peas butties. The only way to go.

11-03-2015, 04:53 PM
I didn't relise fish even had fingers ,you live and learn

11-03-2015, 04:57 PM
Battered fish fingers, thick white bread, mango chutney. Yum yum.

11-03-2015, 05:18 PM
They absolutely have to be Marks and Spencer's Fish Fingers...the King of the Fish Finger world, no room or need for debate on that one.

Anyone who has ever had Spam in their mouth has had a severely deprived and impoverished life, and I feel a little bit sorry for you.

11-03-2015, 05:30 PM
southern food snobbery there hampstead claret...stick to mash and liquor,...;)...;D

11-03-2015, 05:37 PM
Absolutely love em :D

11-03-2015, 05:38 PM
Must be Haddock or Cod and not just any old 'white' fish.

I had FFB this evening!

11-03-2015, 05:51 PM
For me the fish fingers have to be filled with Vietnamese white fish as only the best is good enough for me.

Snob,moi? :D

11-03-2015, 06:11 PM
fish fingers were first made in 1927
Birdseye first marketed them in 1955

So claret tony you must have missed out on comfort food when age 3
Our grandson is 3 and for a treat he gets ffb's once per week.

Also whilst on about comfort food spam butties are right up there.
if you add spotted dick and custard how good is that, but don't tell your dietitian. yum yum

11-03-2015, 06:25 PM
"if you add spotted dick and custard how good is that"

I remember my Mum over 50 years ago making proper spotted dick whereby she used to make it and then wrap it in some sort of cloth tie it tight with another thin bit of material and then put it in a big saucepan full of boiling hot water.

I used to prefer it when it was left to go cold and ideally have one of the end bits and then cover it in hot custard.

Good times! :D

Fish finger butties with lashings of tarter sauce are fantastic.

No other sauce could touch it.

11-03-2015, 07:52 PM
Can't beat Birds Eye Cod fish fingers with tartar sauce. :-)

11-03-2015, 08:09 PM
On a special occasions I don't mind a fish finger tortilla wrap, bit of grated cheddar, bit of iceberg lettuce and a smearing of chilli sauce

11-03-2015, 08:13 PM
Then chuck the lot in the bin and make a real FFB.

11-03-2015, 08:19 PM
Yeah ffb's are OK for training purposes but Holland's meat pie butties are where the smart money is these days. Don't tell Dr Atkins though

11-03-2015, 08:30 PM
Only special occasions as stated Doug. I'm not some sort of animal

11-03-2015, 08:32 PM
Been eating them for years try the healthy option use brown bread

11-03-2015, 09:28 PM
jam rag pudding yum yum

11-03-2015, 09:33 PM
good quality fish fingers on crusty white bread with best butter. a (very) thin slice of cheddar, a dob of tartar sauce, lettuce and thinly sliced tomato. a sprinkle of salt on the tomato.

if not using tartar sauce then you MUST but either vinegar or lemon juice on the fingers.

11-03-2015, 09:37 PM
Foie gras, now there's a great snack.

11-03-2015, 09:41 PM
I've not had many but they have to go with salad on a sarnie.

Decent white bread or preferably granary, anchor butter, spring onions, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, plenty of white pepper, a little salt and salad cream.

11-03-2015, 09:49 PM
A few quality fish fingers on some freshly made white bread with a bit of ketchup will see me through any lunch time

11-03-2015, 10:00 PM
Jamie Oliver recommends crusty while bread, rocket salad leaves and tomato sauce.

Cheapest recipe he will ever do.

11-03-2015, 10:15 PM
The bread cannot be too 'bready'.

Warburton's sliced white does the job.

Fish Fingers in breadcrumbs is wrong. It has to be batter.

Tartare Sauce is essential but you can 'posh it up' with a garden pea puree.

If it looks like this then you have got it completely wrong and you should waz it in the bin immediately.

Funny Stuff !!!
You must have lived a very sheltered life CT never having a FB or even hearing about them in your youth. (and before).
Didn't know fish had fingers used to be a joke in almost every comic and a one liner used by many comedians years ago... George Roper and others I think !!!
Will be watching the Man City game live here across the pond on Sat. a sneaky win will be nice...!!!!

12-03-2015, 07:27 AM
This is weird, me and my mate were having a discussion yesterday on what other food types should be sold at football grounds other than the standard pies, hot dogs, burgers etc.

First thing I said - Fish Finger Butty.

I think it would make a killing - I would be straight in with one if I was at the Turf.

12-03-2015, 09:06 AM
Fish Finger and baked bean butties on milk roll is the only way to do it. It makes a right mess because the bread isn't strong enough to handle the bean juice, but that's part of the fun. Mash it all up together, and if you have some leftover mash then bang that on too, but don't go the effort of making new mash because that's just a big waste of time.

12-03-2015, 09:55 PM
Lie the fingers flat, side by side, in a neat row. Make it really neat, nothing sloppy about it. Remove the coating from the top side of the fingers and place the harvest on a slice of bread. Dress with anything you fancy, fold over the bread and scoff it down. It is important to use only one slice of bread. If you use two, your butty has become a sandwich. Turn over the fish fingers, repeat the process. Finally, add a dash of salt to the remaining nude fingers, pick up one by one and scoff.

Did this fishy character have any participation in Operation Yewtree ?

13-03-2015, 02:49 PM
I'm seeing things like spring onion this and tortilla wrap that, and add a little rocket.

Whilst I respect you're rights according to democracy this is Absolute BLASPHEMY!

Lads this is not Michelin Star cuisine.

Fish fingers, nestled on a slice of buttered Warburton's white sliced (Blue) with tomato sauce.

No more complication needed.

13-03-2015, 06:46 PM
Wholly inspired by this thread, the family are tucking into these beauties tonight...

13-03-2015, 07:05 PM
I do not own this person, aiboforceN, whoever he might be.

Did I not raise him to know that it should be 'family is' , not 'family are'?

13-03-2015, 07:14 PM
I can eat the odd one or two..

13-03-2015, 07:23 PM
Whatever variations you choose to employ, or condiments you prefer to add, no fish finger butty can hold a candle to the simple bacon sandwich. A different league altogether.

13-03-2015, 07:28 PM
Its all a matter of timing. You need to learn that.
