Burnley have played 13 games on 18th August. Those games have only brought four victories of which the most recent was the second time we sent Owen Coyle packing with his biblical tail between his legs.

The defeats are results to skim over quickly. There are two 4-1 defeats in the League Cup at Carlisle in 1992 and at home against Bury in 1998 when Gordon Armstrong got one of the Bury goals in a team that also included Lenny Johnrose with Tony Ellis on the bench.

The most recent of the defeats was just a year ago when Chelsea opened our Premier League season, beating us 3-1 at the Turf after Scott Arfield had given us the lead.

We've had a couple of draws too. In 1970 we got our first point of the 1970/71 season with a 1-1 draw at Everton. Dave Thomas, who had scored in the opening day defeat against Liverpool, got our goal. It would be the end of September before any other Burnley player scored.

That season ended in relegation and so did 1979/80 when the season kicked off

Waldron nips in to steal Shield, said the newspaper headline the day after our 1973 win at City. A well-worked goal it was, and a move that paid off more than once before everyone got wise to it.

Scored against them from a similar free kick a few weeks later in the league match at Turf Moor. This time City waited for the late run into the box but we put the ball in early for Fletcher to nod in at the near post. Classic move from us.
