View Full Version : ON THIS DAY: The Greatest Show on Earth

Burnley have played eleven league games on this day since the resumption of football after the war. We've won four of them and drawn seven which means not a single defeat. The only time we have been on the wrong end of a result has been in the League Cup when we've twice been beaten 2-0 at home.

The first of those defeats was in the quarter-finals in 1975 when a side depleted by injuries was beaten by Middlesbrough, and more recently we lost by that same score at home to Manchester United in the fourth round in 2002 when we conceded goals scored by Diego Forlan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The United team that night included future Clarets David May and Luke Chadwick whilst Lee Roche was a substitute.

There is only one place to start with the league games and it is not with any of the four wins but with the second of those seven draws which came in 1960 at White Hart Lane against Spurs. We were, at the time, champions of England and were just returning from that European Cup triumph
