A clue, it's not Martin Dobson, it might be John Connelly, it's not Ralph Coates, it might be Ray Pointer .

Ok, we are looking for the last Burnley player to win consecutive caps while playing in our famous Claret and Blue colours

I guess it's Connelly as Pointer didn't play after 1961 but they weren't World Cup matches.

I think though that Pointer actually played two consecutive World Cup games in 1961 against Luxembourg and Portugal and scored in both. The Portugal game was a 2-0 win for us and Connelly got the other goal in his only World Cup game that time round.

John Connelly was the last player to play in 2 consecutive England games while playing for Burnley. The year was 1963. He then went on to play for Man Utd where he won further caps.

Ray Pointer won 3 England caps in 1961, which were all consecutive. John Connelly played in 2 of those games leaving the club with 2 Burnley players in the same England game.

Thanks donzy. I think Connellys second game was 63 but the first one was in 62. I wonder why
Pointer was dropped after scoring twice in two - Jimmy Greaves and Johnny Haynes seemed to take over.

One was at the end of 62 ,the other at the start of 63.

He would be a great subject for your legend series

With Pointers 3 international games being in such a short space of time, I wonder if he was picked due to injury to Greaves.

The award of a cap now means nothing when compared to the days of Connelly and Pointer.

Blimey , how many great Burnley players didn't get capped?

Jimmy Adamson is widely regarded as the greatest English player never to receive an England cap.

I agree, in fact Adamson Pointer Elder Blacklaw could also easily fit the bill too.
Tommy Cummings played from the late 40s so was at the end of his career when I saw him is perhaps forgotten but goes back to an even earlier era.

Adanson was offered the England manager job before the 66 World Cup but turned it down! Alf Ramsay then got it it!

I was born in 1963 and I think that Keane is a good defender. Not as good as Mee but good.
