Relegation is ont cards!

The Yorkshire bowling has generally been quite good - the batting has been shocking' Our previous
overseas players (like Williamson, Marsh, and even Handscomb ) have papered over the cracks in recent seasons. We were almost relegated last year, so in a way today is not a complete surprise.

Yorks 2nd Inns - Bairstow just out for 50 off 44 balls... not sure that the players know that this is supposed to be a four-day game!

2nd innings :Yorks 161-2 at the close . Brook 57 not out.
The pitch must have dried out!

Either that or the batsmen have dried out

A fightback by Yorkshire today - a fine maiden ton by young Harry Brook(124), but then another batting collapse to 329 all out, when we should have got a much bigger total.... but then another comeback with four quick wickets for Patterson (4-21), including clean bowling both openers, leaving Essex on 97-4 at the close. In this see-saw of a game, Essex still need another 141 to win

Goodness me Mike what is going on here, 50 all out and we're actually in with a chance of winning this match now!.
If our batters could improve their game we could achieve something this season, but when that happens the bowlers usually get worse then or vice versa.

Root (35) looked quite "rusty" batting today, then just when he seemed to be getting going he was a bit unlucky getting bowled by a ball from Bopara that kept unexpectedly low. Earlier Pujara (41) had looked like he was in good form, but was then bowled by a delivery that that he didn't play a shot at! Leaning (29) managed to add some useful runs at the end, but Bresnan went for a duck. Let's hope that the conditions will help the bowlers tomorrow

Was Bairstow promoted to the number 2 slot in the batting order ?, which Alex Lees used to have (and Ashley Metcalfe as well some years ago!). That was a superb knock by Brook and like you say its a shame when players reach 35+, they then get out very carelessly.
Going back to our previous game by the way, do you reckon Somerset might surprise a lot of teams this season.

Bairstow opened our second innings, but was out just before the close yesterday for 50. If he had still been in this morning, it might have made a big difference to the match. A very assured performance from Brook though, in difficult circumstances- he's got a lot of potential.

Somerset almost won the title two years ago, and still have some good players, so they might do well this season

I reckon the county championship will be gone in the next few years, they are already looking to make changes from 2020,be a shame for traditionalists like me.

Is there something wrong with the wicket.
4 wickets fell without Essex scoring a run

Wicket was OK yesterday when Brook made a ton! Definitely a bit of uneven bounce, with a few keeping low (which did for Root yesterday). Ball not rearing up at all though, in fact a fairly slow pitch. Yorkshire just missed a coupe of catching chances.

UPDATE - Bresnan has just finished Essex off with another lbw (see my comments above)
Amazing that we were bowled out for 50 first innings and then have gone on to win the match fairly comfortably - what an incredible comeback!

Yorkshire won by 91 runs.
We are top of the league!
Patterson took 6 for 40 in the Essex second innings. It's only a couple of weeks ago that he broke a finger. Coad managed to bag 6 wickets in the match, and he was out injured for our first 2018 scheduled game too. So, good work by the Yorkshire physio too.

What an unbelievable match, and great credit to Yorkshire for turning this match around against the defending league champions. Heres to another league title for us Yorkies this season. ;)
