Are they as oppressed as poor gay, black, Jewish female people?

Poor gay, black, Jewish female people are oppressed because they are poor not because of their other characteristics and therefore they fall within the group IBS is concerned with.
Oppression is not an essential characteristic of any of the other groups if they are not also poor.
In the UK in what sense are the following in any way "oppressed"? Ruth Davidson, Stephen Fry, Matthew Parris, Ian McKellen (gay), Lenny Henry, Idris Elba, Naomi Campbell, Paul Bouteng, Trevor Phillips (black), Ralph and David Gold, Jack Cohen, Sir Charles Clore, Baron Danny Finkelstein OBE (Jews).
So the essential component of oppression in modern Britain is poverty and arguably disability. Being gay, black, Jewish or female is totally irrelevant.

You are presumably arguing from a non gay, black, Jewish, female (though possibly disabled) perspective?

Patty, why do you always have to be so insulting? Instead of making ridiculous assumptions about me you might simply address the point: do you consider the people mentioned in my list as "oppressed"? If so why? If they aren't oppressed then surely this is evidence that there being black, gay, Jewish or female is irrelevan in this respect?

Who is saying that these groups of people are 'oppressed'?? IBS implied that they were oppressed but that they were trumped by the poor!?!

But otherwise, who is saying that these groups are oppressed? It sounds a bit like, for some reason, this argument proposition is being forced into the thread. Why?

Post of the year this.

The billionaires club will be laughing their heads off now a once threatening, revolutionary socialist movement which was very dangerous to their interests, have now been reduced to waving rainbow flags

The Socialists should get back on message.....and maybe I will re-join the movement.

You would be better off reading a thread before starting an argument. Patty said exactly that in his first post on the thread above. Before that no one had mention blacks, Jews or women. I then responded saying that imo Patty was wrong and members of these groups were not necessarily oppressed.

But, as I alluded to above - where are these socialists who are waving rainbow flags?? You're the only one on here, and in many other posts, that keep mentioning it! XD

My reading of Patty's post was that he was taking the piss out of you and not making any pro-faction argument! Might be wrong but that's how it appeared. He doesn't strike me as a rainbow flag waving type!

I'm sorry but you really are a trouble causing idiot. How could Patty's post be interpreted as taking the piss out of me as my sole contribution up to that point was to tell IBS to grow up. Your "reading" of everything on this MB is always, always coloured by who has posted it; you're never impartial, never honest and never objective.

Monty, please explain to me what is insulting about my post.

The bracketted "though possibly disabled" immediately after female was clearly intended as an insult. How can you know I'm none of the other things and yet suggest I might be disabled? You were trying to be clever in my view and it was clearly intended to demean me - so therefore insulting.

Oh goodness the gang is assembling. If you read this thread from the beginning and read it honestly you will see very clearly that Patty and raging were deliberately provocative throughout. My observation on poverty and oppression seems perfectly reasonable but raging just wants to start trouble.

Firstly, apologies. I should have said that Patty appeared to me to be taking the piss out of the op and the suggested argument. I stand corrected that he was not taking the piss out you personally.

That aside, where have I been provocative on this thread? I am simply asking who these people are that the op and yourself seem to think are all around us, 'socialists waving rainbow flags'? I simply don't see them around us. And certainly none, other than the op and yourself have proposed it on here.

I don't follow why asking this is confrontational. Being confrontational is like calling someone "an idiot". All I'm doing is questioning the thinking behind the op of the thread and suggesting that no one is arguing what the op seems to be suggesting is so awful. Sorry this has upset you.

Come on Monty you can do better. Yes, many black, gay, jewish, females are not impoverished but ask yourself this question which groups tend to be the most impoverished? I think you will find that certain groups are more prone to poverty and discrimination but, hey ho, we've been here before and maybe this thread is just gonna cover old arguments yet again for the Idiot.

I will stifle my yawn this time and I won't say the mods need to close it because someone will have the face on. So I will quote Peter Jones by saying, "I won't be investing and I'm out"... (in this case, my time).

I'm disappointed, roly, as I had hoped you'd grown up and left the gang. However, to return to the actual points at issue, if you have research showing gays and Jews in the UK are more likely to be impoverished than other groups please do share it. I realise I'm risking one of the famour roly yawns but what the heck.

Roly, you have grown on me in recent weeks but you do still have (as Kerr points out) a tendency to deny the undeniable. How do you square "Didn't mention gays and Jews..." with "Yes, many black, gay, jewish, female...etc?" "Gay" is in the frigging thread title ffs and my argument with Patty (who I normally am fond of) and ravingnut (who I most definitely am not fond of) was precisely about the generalised application of the term "impoverished" to blacks, Jews and gays. I assume your coyness about "certain groups" is rolyspeak for blacks. You should talk to more successful black people who would very quickly put you straight for suggesting they as a group are more prone to poverty. Do pay attention.
