France to play qualifiers for Euro 2016

France, who host Euro 2016 are likely to have to play qualifiers for their own tournament but their games will not count for any points.

SSN just reporting this, the purpose apparently is to have France playing worthwhile friendlies as it is hard to find teams to play while others have qualifying games. The draw will be made as usual next month, and the group that would usually have 5 teams in it, will now have France.

Basically, the qualifiers will continue as usual but instead of one nation in the group of 5 being without a game whilst the other 4 play, they will instead play France in a friendly.

which will be absolutely pointless - why would a country risk injuring their best players against France in a meaningless friendly when they can send their kids to play? - and so France won't get to play 'competitive' games and the domestic leagues will be screwed up for an extra week as they force in another international...
Sounds to me like someone's daft idea to help France out - you'd almost think that UEFA had a French chief...

when I first saw the headline I couldn't believe that under the UEFA guidance of Michele platini, france looked like being penalised in having to qualify for their own home tournament.

read a bit more and I see acutally it's designed to help them play what would be considered more competitive matches against other nations rather than just the friendlies that end up being farcical more often that not.

so of course, plantini is once again engineering an advantage for his homeland. it's incredible in a time where corruption is rife in football this guy gets away with constantly changing the rules to suit his own agenda.

don't forgot changing the coefficient rankings system which helped them get the easiest group in the world cup.

You'd have to use players strictly from yourd squad though right? And you'd the strongest possible squad for the game that actually counts so France would get a decent game no matter what.

I think you'll find we shot ourselves in the foot playing teams like Scotlan in friemdlys and reducing our would rankings even if we went out and won!

Switzerland played the points game well and reaped the reward!


As for the topic in hand its a great idea and doesnt leave a nation out in the wilderness for two years. Routine and still being able to pit themselves against usual opposition. they are going to play friendlys reguardless and this will help stop them fixing the seedings too!
