I was reading on the Beeb website that Jeremy Guscott is predicting the winner will come from either England, France , Ireland or Wales.
I thought I should share his expert opinion on here so's not to have a massive edge over everyone else.

Thanks for that Hugh. This seems to be a popular view amongst the experts as Brian Moore (ex England hooker not ITV commentator) said pretty much the same.

People should take note.

Update after the first week of the 6 Nations. Everybody got the straightforward task correct of predicting Wales and Ireland to win (even Jim), but less than half got France beating England.

Hard to imagine there will be a better game than that in the entire tournament and yes SD I was a tad gutted afterwards. But I look to the positives now and we really should've won, our second half performance was outstanding. Shame Lancaster chooses to make substitutions by default, replacing Hartley has done for us again. But with key men missing (Tuilagi, Corbisiero, Croft) this team can improve so much more.

Hope you like the League Table...

Absolute cracking game of Rugby, the 1st 30 secs and when we didn't capitalize on the line we had on their line mid way through the 2nd half undid all the hard work.

I also do not understand some of these substitutions, Hartley and Care should both

chiswickmart
03-02-2014, 01:52 PM
Trying to look at it objectively, I think Lancaster is trying to build a team that can keep up a high level of intensity for the full 80 mins. To be fair to Youngs, he caused a lot of problems for the French in the loose, but will be haunted by that one missed line out throw (unfortunately he did the same against NZ). It's a learning experience and but for a couple of lucky bounces of the ball, the French wouldn't have scored their 2 early tries.

All a matter of building for 18 months time when hopefully we'll get the luck too.

betalucky

I thought we were guilty of a lot of poor decision making in the 1st half, and I agree about the substitutions, especially Care.

Lineouts puzzle me - throwing in is a totally unique skill which has nothing to do with the rest of the game, so why is it always the hooker that has to do it?

Penalty kicking, for example, isn't always done on the basis of which number a player has on his back, admittedly most kickers are 10s or 15s, but there are plenty of 9s taking penalties, and John Eales kicked some important penalties as a lock forward.

A reasonable start against Italy although they'll need to up their game against Ireland. Effectively giving away two tries is just about retrievable against the likes of Italy but won't be acceptable against the big boys. Saying that Italy are improving and are going to give everybody a game.
Didn't see the England game unfortunately, sounded a good game, I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it :) Always disappointing to lose the first game of the tournament, I remember how p!ssed off I was last year after the first half embarrassment against Ireland.

Beta, it seems to be a traditional thing for the hooker to take the throw ins, probably dates back to the time when the hooker was the smallest in the pack, whereas these days the front row is effectively made up of three props. It wasn't always the hooker however, I remember the All Blacks used to use their wingers to throw in e.g. Grant Batty. Again though that would date back to the time when the wingers were the smallest of the backs unlike th

Update follwing the second hilarious week of the 6 Nations. Waiting to hear who Gatland blames this one on, what a thrashing. The concern is that only France's trip to Cardiff looks like stopping them winning the Grandslam.

England's game against Scotland was boring, huge gulf in class but not shown in the scoreline. Someone's going to get thrashed soon, I do hope it's Wales.

Cack game and cack result. I said after last week's game it's time to bring Hook back into the team and he would certainly have helped give some different options to the predictable crash bang wallop. Oh how we could do with a Shane Williams back too!
England looking good (although boring) and should move on from here. One note however, somebody needs to have a word with the cocky little gobsh!te that is Owen Farrell, he's going to pick on the wrong person soon and end up with a re-designed nose!

Looking like it's going to be Ireland's title due to points difference unfortunately but the Wales v England game at Twickers should be a thumping affair now both are back on track.
I was actually down at Esher RC on Saturday for the England v France ladies U20's, as my daughter's friend plays for England. They got a wallopping from France but at least I was introduced to a new and unexpected experience of supporting England in a rugby international, weird!

Not sure I agree with you about the Irish. They've only won once in Paris in 50 years, they'll need to do so again to win it. I reckon it will be decided in Twickenham in 2 weeks. Although I've always thought winning the 6 Nations without a Grandslam to be a bit pointless anyway, unless we played all teams home and away.

The England team will improve massively before the World Cup. When they get back the likes of Corbisiero, Cole, Tuilagi, 2 wingers and not to mention what Sam Burgess might do. I'll take another win now and keep the momentum going.

Totally agree with you about Swing Low, and anyone doing the actions needs shooting. It's right up there with Scum's Gay wave.

Tut tut Corky a bit of stereotyping there, just because some chaps are big and black doesn't mean they all work in cotton fields!

Btw Swing Low was hijacked as a rugby 'song' donkeys years back, and not just in England. A good old spiritual negro song it may be but as a rugby anthem... No!

Chis, re Ireland I think their points tally should just be too much, particularly for us as we were on the receiving end for most of that. However I wouldn't be surprised if they did now go on to lose to France and whoever else they're to play, they can be prone to that!

Clearly only the Welsh. England without 6 first choice players and targetting the World Cup (not the 6 Nations) have precious little to lose. But defeat for Wales here will make their World Cup mission look impossible.

The latest table following this weekend's fixtures. I still have every result correct and so obviously does the blatant cheat Beta. Italy have 52 points now, so will need to score 11 or more against England for Beta not to win. However, if Ireland beat France then Bladder could win if Italy score more than 17 points. Not likely.

I missed the game yesterday, were you watching SD? I must watch a recording today sometime. Poor old Gatland needs to keep his mouth shut. Not looking good for the World Cup now SD. I heard the scoreline flattered you too. Ouch!!

I didn't see any rugby this weekend, I got unexpectedly tied up with things in Wales, only just back now!
Haven't had chance to catch up with the game but did hear it was pretty much all England. At least that might now mean changing our crash bang wallop game and having a more subtle plan B.

The final scores for the 2014 competition. It took to the final game for myself and my cheating chum Beta to get a result wrong, but with Ireland winning in Paris it meant 3 of us (with Bladder) had 14 results correct. I needed Italy to score 11 points to get ahead of Beta in the tiebreak and stone the crows they only went and scored 11!!. So I pip the cheat by 1 point. Bladder well back on the tiebreak.

As for the 6 Nations itself, perhaps they need to make it 4 Nations and let them play home and away for a proper comp. Italy and Scotland are adding nothing at the moment. England are starting to look particularly formidable and with strength to add to this team they are serious contenders for the World Cup next year. This was probably the last hurrah for an ageing irish side whilst wales have clearly been found out. England's next 4 fixtures are against NZ with the first likely to be with a reserve side (clashes with the Prem Final, what outstanding planning that was)!! Oh great.

Good to see Wales finish with a flourish even if it was against 14 Scots, young Hogg was a bit of a naughty boy!
Only saw the England tries, assume it was a walk in the park that the score suggests.
Shame France fecked up with that forward pass at the end of the game when they should have beaten Ireland... not that I wanted England to snatch the title but just wanted to see Ireland throw it away again!
