Nelson lies four miles north of Burnley, in Lancashire, and the team returned to the North West Counties League for the 2011/2012 season, after having withdrawn the previous season.
The club enjoyed a ten-year spell in the Football League from 1921, and their greatest achievement came when winning the Third Division North title in 1923. The resulting celebration tour of Spain also saw them beat both Real Madrid and Real Oviedo.
