oxford_tavernWe find ourselves in the middle of another international break this week and I find the memories of this league coming flooding back to me. It seems to be either all or nothing. One minute we?ve got Saturday and midweek games stacking up on top of each other, the next, the training ground is depleted with the lads away with their respective countries. For me though, that is a testament to the quality of players we have here and this time round, as well as all the usual suspects, we have young John Joe O?Toole receiving his first international call up for the Republic of Ireland ?s U21?s. He?s having a fantastic couple of months after a run in the first team and now this ? it?s a great reward and he knows that he?s got to keep it up now. He?s raised the bar and like everyone else, it has to be maintained. I thought it was a promising performance from the team on Saturday against Colchester. The result wasn?t what I would have liked and I thought we did more than enough to take all three points, but in terms of the football that was played, I think it proves that we are improving all the time and heading in the right direction. Our movement and our build up play was some of the best I?ve seen from us so far this season, but sadly our finishing wasn?t as clinical as I would have liked. I said after the game that we had created enough chances to have won seven games let alone one, and you can rest assured that we will be looking to take that same style of play into our game against Barnsley next week, but with a few more goals to talk about. So now it?s back to the grind of five games in two weeks, and just as we have to be more motivated than ever, you need to be behind us even more than you have been through the start of this season. We are in a tremendous position at this stage and we are only seeking to improve. This next batch of games will be vital to our season, so we need your support more than ever. Third-placed CSKA Moscow are not in contention on 50 points. Spurred on by a capacity 21-thousand home crowd Saint Petersburg, who won the Soviet league in 1984, pushed hard from the start seeking an early goal. Russian international striker Andrei Arshavin put Saint Petersburg 1-0 up in the 19th minute shooting home from seven-metres from Turkish teammate Fatih Tekke's short cross. Russia's nine-time champions Spartak Moscow easily and predictably took three points thrashing already relegated Rostov. Spartak dominated the play in general but managed to open the score only in the 40th minute, when their Ukrainian midfielder Maxim Kalinichenko fired into the top left-hand corner with a 20-metre freekick. Brazilian striker Soares Welliton and midfielder Denis Boyarintsev added one apiece after the halftime break to keep Spartak in the race for the domestic title. 04 November 2007 00:37 Started on 'Glory Hornets Board' forum
