replied to FAO Dundee Utd fans replied to Should the corrupt SPL say sorry tae Rangers ? replied to SPHell2 now looking likely replied to Most dislikable player ever... replied to The promises the zombies believed replied to Dark days for the SPL The first period encompasses 29 seasons: As might be expected the Old Firm come out on top with 11 titles for Rangers and 10 for Celtic. Other teams did quite well though with 3 titles for Hibs, 2 for Hearts and one each for Aberdeen, Dundee and Killie. What's interesting though is that during the first 19 of those seasons, Celtic only won 1 title (53-54) ie fewer than Hearts or Hibs. Crowds in this era were also at their highest ever for all bar the OF which with the title going outside Glasgow on average just under once every 4 seasons could be expected. Title races were in the main very close with one or the other of the OF nowhere (eg Celtic 12th in 47-48). The biggest margins of victory were 13 pts (57-58!!!) and 10 pts (50-51) for Hearts and Hibs respectively.Crowds decreased across the board during Celtic's 9-in-a-row (even for Celtic amazingly bearing in mind Jock Stein and the European Cup win) as the OF stranglehold took its grip. The next period from 75-76 up to 85-86 was probably the most competitive in Scottish football. During this period, Celtic won 5 titles, Aberdeen 3, Rangers 2 and Dundee Utd one. Since then, once the serious money started flowing into Glasgow, there have been 27 seasons inc the present with not a single title going outside Glasgow. Significantly the margins of victory (or gap between 2nd OF team and 3rd place) have increased dramatically since the incept of the current SPL in 1998 and the redistribution of wealth to the rich from the poor. Crowds on the whole appear to be down in this latter period with the exception of the OF, massively up compared with previous decades, Hearts and Hibs (similarish), everyone else struggling. What is clear is that Scottish football can thrive even if the playing field is not totally level. The eras when Scottish football was at its most competitive coincided with our teams achieving the most in Europe. Younger fans might not believe it but the season Celtic won the European Cup, Rangers got to the final of the Cup-winners Cup and Killie to the semis of the Fairs Cup (now Europa League). The next season, Dunfermline also got to the last 4 of the Cup Winners Cup. In the 80s, Aberdeen won the Cup Winners Cup, got to the semis the next year and the quarters of the European Cup the season after that. Dundee Utd made the quarters of a Euro Comp 6 years on the trot inc a UEFA Cup Final in 1987 , the European Cup semi final (I was there!!) in 1984 and they were genuinely feared and respected in Europe. Hearts also made the UEFA quarter finals in 1988-89 taking over 8,000 fans to Munich... What is really gob*****ing however, is that since competition effectively disappeared in Scotland, is how poor the OF have been in Europe. But why expect anything else? They hoover up all the cash (even in Div 3 how much TV cash will Zombie FC have made??), all the best players from their rivals and whinge about the lack of competition at home weakening them in Europe. 17 April 2013 18:07 Started on 'ScottishFitba Messageboard' forum
