In our two days of discussions, we have come up with a few solutions that removes the totally blatant celebration of slavery, yet preserves the history. People are worried about “over reaction” and the protesters deep diving the situation. There’s only the totally stupid people that can’t see something needs doing about the blatant statues. The less blatant ones should stay.
Shouldn't we be thinking about how we teach our children history as it really was & not some establishment view that we are fed
We were taught [when I was at school] about William Wilberforce & that he was responsible for the abolition of the slave trade which I totally accept, but sadly that's where the teaching stopped
I was never taught how our Empire was built on the proceeds of the trade
WD & HO Wills,& many other examples I've learned since was a prime example
I am not advocating that such examples be expunged from the record [if they were ever there on obvious view] but not to even be told about them does not allow for the student [for that is where our minds are developed] to make up their own minds after being put in possession of the facts
That will trump all the statues arguments
Good post Exile. I agree about the education system brainwashing us into thinking certain things without presenting all the facts and kids making their own minds up.
The education system desperately needs updating to modern standards of thinking but I don't think that the establishment will ever allow that to happen because it will weaken their clasp on society and be the start of their fall from power.
They’ve taken Faulty Towers off the TV now. Everybody’s scared of offending everybody. Comedy is becoming on impossible job. If nobody laughs we become like robots. How boring
Fools & Horse's next ( Pepsi n Shirley ) :s
There are many instances where the comedy sketches/scenes are laughing at the bigots to show what tools they are rather than joining in with the bigotry. I would put the Major's rants in Fawlty Towers about other nationalities in that category. It is designed to make him look outdated and silly in his views and language rather than joining in agreeing with him
