Don’t mean to come across like that! It’s a very dicey business and some papers will take it to the limit, without actually being in contempt. You’ll often read that police are questioning, say, a 37-year-old man in connection with their inquiries. Reporters will dig out the name and gather info from friends, neighbours etc to build up a background to be used if and when someone is convicted. But once the individual is named by police and charged they can say no more. Same with previous convictions. You can’t mention them and they won’t be referred to in court until or if an accused is found guilty or pleads guilty when the judge will consider them in deciding on a sentence
