Can't find Sunderland turnover but the year they got relegated from prem league it was 126 million. The year in champ was 68 million. Can't see how Sunderland are not the biggest spenders. Got to be over 20 million

Sorry the figure I gave you was oxford
Peterborough was 1.37 mill
I think the source was referring more to new contracts flour. I totally accept that Sunderland will have some very hefty legacy contracts (as I suspect will Ipswich). The conversation started out in relation to the fun and games the club has with agents. It's from discussions with agents and indeed from players that the clubs get a feel for who's paying what in the division.
He also confirmed that we have nobody on anywhere near £6k pw (I've seen people think Jones is on that amount). And also that every single player had a relegation clause which saved the club a fortune.
Also, we stand to make circa £200k if WBA are promoted, but much more than that if they sell Ajayi (unless of course they sell him for peanuts).
The buy out clause may specify £2.5 million, but we don't know what Peterborough accepted for him. Probably nothing like that figure given that his contract expires in the summer.
Buy out clauses favour the player, not the club. They give the player the right to walk away if the specified offer is made.
Too right Brinster regarding the gamble they are taking. D Mac strikes me as that type of character. I think his personal wealth fluctuates widely as it's tied to property values (I could be wrong on that, it's just from memory).
I think what I meant by the contractual clause was that, if the club are paying the player mega wages then the trade off is the club demanding a minimum transfer fee. The player (and agent) are likely to agree as they want the higher wages in the first place.
I remember Warney once saying (publicly at a forum) that in the Championship we could sometimes match the wages being offered for certain players "by the likes of Wigan, Millwall, etc" but those clubs wouldn't insist on relegation clauses whereas we always do. And we lost out on players as a direct result of such clauses. Some clubs, as you rightly say, seem much more prepared to gamble. Given our history, I prefer to strike the balance between prudence and just that little bit of gamble (perhaps on loan players). It cant be easy mate.
