So, noting that Stoke had just axed their manager, and they had been interested in GR before, he lets it be known that we have no money and will have to sell our best players. The future is grim, prospects are bleak. He then drops a hint in the press that Stoke may be interested, thus attracting that interest from Stoke and also GR.
Result: GR quits, we bank a couple of million compensation instead of having to pay a few million to get rid, and the new manager will mysteriously get funds now without having to sell our best players. Pretty shrewd move eh, and here we are slagging Mel off? If only it were so!
