imo Cristiano couldn't lace the boots of the others mentioned above.
How come Davie Narey's not getting a mention here?

If you were to choose any player at their peak then Messi and C Ronaldo would be hard to beat. But Marradona probably was the ultimate in producing in one man teams
It's a tricky question when it comes up because since the era of Pele the game has changed so much. It's hard to know whether Pele in a Brazil team would have outshone Maradona in an Argentinian team of the same era. etc
Messi is the most skilful imo but the greatest overall would have to be the wee fat hand of god columbian marching powder sniffing mental case that is Maradona that left a whole Engerland team trailing in his wake like sleepy donkeys ;D

Maybe his laces are still tied?
Maradona also played in a era where the game was slower, less physically demanding and it was easier to stand out individually. In terms of who the best is, it is Messi. All sports evolve, especially those which are awash with money, and generally the best player is the exceptional one in the modern era. However, the evolution doesn't always lead to more entertainment. Perhaps the better question would be: who was the most entertaining player of all time.
Always going to be impossible to compare players from different eras. A few players not mentioned so far who would likely be on any list of top twenty (well mine anyway):
George Best
Garrincha
Alfredo di Stefano
Ferenc Puskás
Jose Andrade (admittedly before my time)
