Saxo - on the whole, you're right about NZ. There are very few "stranger" murders. I suppose it can happen anywhere, but it's a shock. We know the area where the body was found very well, as both my son and daughter live out that way.
They seem like a lovely family too - horrible.
There has been quite a lot of these happening all over the world lately,but what can you say to someone who is determined to take a year out and do this.. You can only warn them to the perils out there and hope they need what you say..

I’m of the caution first mentality myself, even though I encourage folk (my offspring included) to travel to broaden the mind.
This is to see the good and the bad of alleged greener pastures.
It’s a sad reality that this can happen virtually anywhere. However backpacking solo is to my mind pushing it.
I am getting the impression this was brought about by a Tinder encounter, if so that sort of elevates the ‘risk’ as far as I’m comcerned. Even though I know nothing about such sites apart from the ‘readily meet the prince/princes of your dreams’ predict!
