The u20's moved closer to the Development League West title following last night's 2-1 win over Queen's Park at Palmerston whilst closest rivals Morton slipped to a defeat by the same score away to Clyde.
QoS were dominant for the most part in the "Queens" derby at Palmerston. Queen's Park's goalkeeper made fine stops in the first half to deny Aidan Smith (twice) and Ross Fergusson whilst the woodwork prevented another shot from going in. However, a minute before the interval the deadlock was broken when Dean Brotherston's perfect free kick to the back post found Scott Hooper to bullet home a header.
The second period followed on similar lines with the lead being doubled on 65 minutes. Brotherston was again the provider, playing the ball through to Connor Murray to slip the ball past the keeper and into the corner of the net. In the final 10 minutes the side eased up a little and nearly paid the penalty with Queens Park pulling a goal back and only a smart save from Jim Atkinson prevented an equaliser soon after. However, the 3 points were clinched.
The result leaves us 9 points clear of Morton with three games to go (Morton have four games left and a better goal difference). However, two of the remaining three games are head to heads with Morton who won 3-2 at Palmerston earlier this season, one of only two defeats the 20's have suffered all season. Nothing is won yet. However with the two sides meeting at Palmerston next Tuesday night, victory would wrap up the title. Kick off at Palmerston on March 21st is a 7:30pm. Free admission so why not pop along if you can and encourage the young side along.
