ill tell you what ,big jt when arranging one of those concerts ,put it back a week before printing the tickets cause there was one of these types of things like the whiskey thing happening ,i never see the organisers of these events ever taking queens into consideration all thay need to do is check queens fixture list and get these things going a weekend while queens are away .
KFTS turns up now and then on this Forum like a bad smell and if Queens followed any of his advice they would be bankrupt overnight. It was rumoured he was asked if he could help out at Queens but apparently got cold feet and declined. Not seen much at Palmy these days as too many blue noses has scared off XD
I noticed that the supporters liaison committee hasn't met this season. I know they are voluntary but it would be good if it could convene and perhaps we could compile a list of things to take to it?
"Carlisle benefits directly from Dumfries retail and facilities being so bad and in fact has done so for countless years."
JR makes a good point, but to reverse that trend it is not as simple as matching what Carlisle has; - what we need to do in Dumfries is provide something that is completely unique and people will come. Once, or if you have that in place, - then you're laughing and restaurants and other types of entertainment will spring up on the back of it.
For example, take the flood defence scheme, - grab that £30 million of public money with both hands, and then see what can happen. Create a zip wire from the top of what was the deer park hill, run it across the Nith with a landing spot on the Whitesands, - get Laggan Outdoors to bring in the know-how, - with the proviso that they can have a riverside restaurant café for five years rent free.
In other words, the private sector brings in the capital expenditure and the spin off along the river front could be phenomenal with other restaurants, hotels and private housing all wanting a piece of the action, knowing that the flood prevention is in place and more importantly they can get insurance.
Instead of listening to the doom mongers who would rather we didn't get the government cash and simply kept a car park, - which funnily enough is full of the cars (from first thing in the morning) of the very business people who wonder why no one comes into their shops, - we should be investing in a new and diverse Dumfries, which would demand a multi story car park to cope with the influx of tourists wanting to come here.
That is how you change a town, - not allowing it to slowly die while blaming all around you!
Jardi is correct . There needs to be heads locked together - regardless of political persuasions- and brainstorming sessions about what is and what isn't do-able. . Zip wires across the Nith are innovative and certainly thinking 'outside the box'. If the retail side is 'dead' then Dumfries has to find a way to get families and visitors in for leisure pursuits. The opening of DG1 in the Summer is a start but that's all it is.
The decline of our town has taken decades, exacerbated by social and technological changes, unintelligent planning decisions, and a naive faith that ‘the market’ will solve the problems it has created. It may take as long to reconfigure Dumfries town centre in ways that generate lasting local benefits, but Jardi's ideas are well worth focusing as a starting point.
