Really sad news this, an absolute legend amongst those of us from that generation that watched his side bring us two league cups, the first division championship for the first time in a lifetime, and the icing on the cake, the European cup when it really was only champions allowed to compete, he may have left by the time we won it but it was his team playing the way he trained them, hard, never give up, "do you want to bet against us?" RIP HEITS,
Absolute legend. Gave us what he demanded from his players. 110%
"Do you want to bet against us"
Legend.
Such sad news.
Thanks for the wonderful memories.
RIP Ron
A Villa legend joins the HEITS, what's remarkable about the league title in '81 was that several other managers were in their prime like Clough, Paisley et al. He left Villa for Blues and I don't think I ever heard anyone speak negatively of that decision.
RIP Ron - simply the best, you made us fall in love with AVFC
’m still quite sad about it all. Although Vic Crowe was still manager in my first VP game, Ron was the first manager that I really took any notice of. Certainly the first Villa manager that I got to know about, in interviews and the like.
Always hurriedly turned to the inside page of the matchday programme for his pre match thoughts and the 110% that he expected from the players and of course, the fans. He had the aura of an old school headmaster, and I would hang on his every word.
I don’t remember any real animosity when he had that ‘brainfart’ and went down the road. There was the one song, ‘You, must, be EFFING mad,...Saunders, Saunders’. But that was just questioning his sanity, not personal abuse.
Anyway, R.I.P. Mr Saunders, and THANK YOU, SO VERY MUCH.
