The lens cutting machinery is vastly more accurate than it was, so today’s technician doesn’t know much about hand edging lenses but I reckon it’s a skill that’s still better to have.
So let me get this straight. You've spent 45 years perfecting your hand edging technique...:O
Not entirely.
I spent the first couple of years fixing joints.
Like yourself and Stewart’s my first job was lens edging, I started with Lizars in their Royal Exchange Square workshop in Glasgow, worked there for a few months then moved the few yards to the shop in Buchanan Street, repaired broken specs and made adjustments to new ones. Left after a year for an apprenticeship in scientific optics.
