Had the pleasure of seeing Don Ratcliffe helping guide the Alex to only their second promotion from Division Four during season 1967-68. Brilliant winger in the twilight of his career, who wore the number 11 shirt in that classic, crucial and pulsating end of the season game on May 4th 1968 against Luton Town. Alex won 2-1, with goals from Gary Talbot and Kevin McHale. Victory saw the Alex gain promotion into Division Three.
It is interesting to note that Ratcliffe made his footballing debut for Stoke against Bury on Xmas day in 1954. You wouldn't get today's professionals turning out on that day.
