Wolves 3 United 0 - view from the sofa

View from the sofa…credit to those that went for a rain cold February night on TV and a game that was effectively over after half an hour.

    ----

For the first time in a long time going back to Walsall a year ago and then maybe Southend a whole 17 months ago; United were well beaten. However, in those two games a run of goals saw off the Blades in shock defeats. Tonight, for maybe the first time in Wilder’s tenure United were completely outplayed, outfought and outthought. Wolves’ million-pound stars tore United to shreds at times in a game that saw United have plenty of the ball but do little with it. United lost 3-0 and it could have been much more in a game that John Ruddy barely had anything to do. The miserable night was compounded when Simon Moore’s ridiculous moment of lunacy saw him wildly boot an opponent in the guts and rightly receive a red card.

Manager Wilder made one change with Ricky Holmes making his first United start for the Blades who had dropped down to 8th before kick-off. Clarke, Stearman and Evans all faced their former side. United began well with Holmes and Baldock involved early but despite this decent start it was a wonder goal that shook the visitors. NEVES picked up the ball after a break and from 30 yards hit a stunning shot that cannoned in off the far post giving Moore no chance. It was a scintillating strike.

United tried to rouse themselves but Evans shot well over before Jota then fed Costa who fired just wide. More flicks and tricks saw the same man then feed the ball into Jota who was blocked out before Costa was then close to a second. United struggled to stem the tide but had a spell of possession for a period without affecting the Wolves goal.

The second goal game from a lovely move that saw several Wolves players involved. JOTA was able to play a one two and then get the return to power the ball home. It was a beautiful goal although maybe United could have got a foot in earlier in the move; that is taking nothing away from the slick football.

United were stunned and with only half an hour gone faced an uphill task. Wilson had a low shot easily saved but Wolves had more chances before the half time whistle came.

The second half saw a more even game with the Blades having a half chance where Holmes fired badly over when well placed but Wolves looked the more dangerous going forward and some delightful footwork from Costa wrongfooted Stevens before two free kicks in dangerous areas saw Douglas blocked on both occasions.

United brought on Leonard and Donaldson for Holmes and Basham but soon after these changes it was game over. A ball over the top saw Jota onto it and Moore came and missed the ball completely and kicked the Wolves man high in the midriff. It was an awful tackle and the red card that followed was a simple decision. Young Jake Eastwood came on but his first act was picking the ball out of the net as the free kick from CAVALEIRO flicked off Clarke in the wall and wrongfooted the young keeper to make it 3-0.

It was damage limitation now and subs Bonatini and Afobe both were narrowly wide as it was ole football at times from the leaders. United looked a sorry side by the full-time whistle and were chasing shadows long before the end of the four minutes of stoppage time.

United – We got stuffed and comprehensively so. People will say we were in the game for spells but we did nothing with the ball and were chasing shadows without it. They just got men behind the ball waited for us to lose it and then sprinted forward to their next dangerous attack. They knew we did not have the pace or players to run at them. Defensively we could not live with their runners and they threatened to cut us to threads at times. I felt when we had it we just played it square and back. We never wanted to try and get them turned and nobody penetrated. The wing backs other than a few moments from Baldock did not advance and the wide centre backs did not advance but then we got overrun in midfield they could not. We then changed it and did a bit better but it was too late. I felt key men such as Clarke and Fleck were poor and lost their battles and we relied on brief threats from Baldock and Holmes. Too many players seemed to have no belief we could actually compete in the game. Remember this was the same team we beat at the Lane; granted with 10 men. This shows the two directions the sides have gone since.

For all their skill and the goals and quality; the things that got me the most was the work ethic. They won more 50/50 tackles, won the loose stuff and all the physical battles they won. They only way we could stop them was drag them back after they got to the ball first. We were dirty tonight and should have had more sent off but not dirty in getting some crunching ‘let them know you are there’ tackles but dirty in the sense that we lost our men and then tripped or pulled them back.

We started the game ok and had a few decent attacks but then they score with a wonder goal (people blaming Evans or others) need just to concede it was a superb goal. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up. Evans might have got out but he bent it that far wide when he hit it; it would probably have not mattered little. Moore had no chance. The second was a great team goal but Stevens gave his man too much time and Basham was ball watching. Moore also could have got a firmer hand to it but was hit in close. Still a great goal. They could have had 3 or 4 more goals. In between goals one and two we did ok with Holmes doing some neat pieces of play but we never looked like scoring with a weak Wilson shot the only effort on goal all game. After it went 2-0 they may as well have come off. We stood off for long periods and seemed to invite pressure as good as they were. It became like a practice game. Second half we had a spell but other than half chance for Holmes never looked like scoring at all. They still had more chances and then the Moore sending off killed it. Ridiculous and should be fined for a moment of madness. Killed the game and also affects us for the next 3 games. What was he thinking? After this they could have scored 5 or 6. We gave up and it was painful to watch.

Wolves were brilliant and simply too good. They have multi million-pound players who have played for Porto and Sporting Lisbon and we have their cast offs or players that have played lower champ or League One. That is the reality.

Today brought into sharp reality where we are at. We are nearer the likes of Preston, Brentford, Ipswich etc than the Wolves, Villa, Derby etc of this world. Most of the clubs I compare us to have been mid table teams at this level for 4 or 5 years and you sense for us that might be the best we can hope for without the investment. People may say we cannot go silly and chuck money at it as it could be suicide but I am not sure what the Prince’s intentions are really? Has he come here to be a Preston or Brentford at this level or did he come here to thrust himself and his people properly into the spotlight and be part of the big Premier League global market. If it is the latter then you would have thought now he would have spent money? Next year will be even harder. Maybe he has been surprised by our progress and we have almost made it harder for fans in that if we do tail off and have say a season or two at mid table will fans grumble and expect more. Should we expect more or is that about the best we can hope for with current spending power (however we grumble about it – that is what we have and nothing we can do without fresh investment).

It is an interesting one as some feel Wilder may say he has had enough and sod off in 6 months or a year if we don’t kick on and give him a proper chance but then you could argue no Prem team took a chance on him when his star was at its highest. If we continue to trail off and finish mid-way and are say are mid table next year; no Prem team would take him I feel. His only way of leaving would be to another Champ club with more spending power. Would he leave United for that? United’ success this season has almost made fans hungry for more and maybe pushed up expectation level too much. We have done really well and even if we do finish say mid table that is a solid season. It is just frustrating that we had a real chance and but for a few injuries and maybe the board not quite properly backing Wilder; it seems like the chance has gone. I recall a Wednesday fan saying after they lost to Hull when a lot of my other Wednesday mates were saying they would go one better; he argued they had missed their best chance and it might be 4 or 5 years before they get the opportunity again and it looks like that has proved right. We had an opportunity this year and now it seems to have gone which is a shame.

Going back to this season, the playoffs is going to be really hard to achieve. The sides above save for maybe 6th are well away now and all on good form. The likes of us and Leeds are just fading away. Next Saturday really is a huge game. Whoever loses that could very well be starting at a mid-table finish. Win and you give yourself a jot in the arm.

Our current form is really poor (4th lowest in league in terms of points accumulated last 12 games and relegation form really) and now we simply have to steady the ship and get a few goals and wins (we are not only not winning but not scoring – outside the Norwich game we have scored 1 goal in 5 games at Derby) and simply do not look the same side with the energy levels on and off the ball missing. We need to stop the rot and quick as if we have another month like the last one we will be in the bottom half. We do not look like putting a run of wins together at all and the performances even when decent has still seen us fail to win (Bristol City, Derby, Villa, Birmingham). Wilder has a huge week. He needs to bring Duffy back next week and needs to get back to basics of earlier in the season – pressing high up the field, winning the ball and then attacking with pace and fluidity. Everything we have done has been slow on and off the ball and we look a tired side that lacks belief. The coaching staff have a huge week to restore confidence after two crushing defeats this week that has really hit the side hard.

Wolves – They lost to Forest recently in an off day and of course we beat them at the Lane but today they showed why they will win the league at a canter. They are technically miles better than anyone else; they attack at will and are superb in the final third; where it matters. They played some lovely moves and scored two wonderful goals; one individual and team. They could have had a lot more. They worked hard and pressed when they did not have it to compliment the good stuff they played.

Not sure how the expenditure fits into the financial fair play rules although they have been smart with loans etc to compliment the 2 or 3 big money ones also. It does seem off that a second-tier team with income you would think in line with ours and many other clubs (crowds similar etc) can spend so much money within the rules but when you have legitimately rich owners; there is always a way round it.

It is a bit maddening to see them spend money on former Champions League players (Porto’s former captain) and players of huge pedigree when we have spent a year trying to sign Southend’s captain for half a million tops. However, that is where we are at. They will go up and will do well next year. They may spend more. Good luck to them. They are having a proper go. It may mean spending a lot of money but is yielding results and they will get Premier League football. You say today what great football they play. Without significant investment we are a long way off that.

Opposition Man of the Match: Take your pick. They are a proper side. Jota was the man of the match though and at times unplayable. They all work hard and defend properly as well as attack. Jota and Neves are the stand outs of course. They are great players but they have athletes and runners all over the side. The British lads like Coady, Douglas, Bennett and Ruddy do their jobs but it is the foreign contingent that make them so good. Even the defensive players like Boly, N’Diaye and Cavaleiro can pass the ball and move off the ground so quick. All three of these are massive units. The lads in front are special though. Costa, Jota and Neves are something else. Costa was a diving so and so but he is a good player who would be even better if he stopped looking for fouls and stayed on his feet. However, Jota and Neves are something else. The former is superb on the ball and very strong for a small man. He made our players look like cones at times. A joy to watch. The latter is a great technical player too. The fact they have likes of Bonatini and Afobe on the bench sums up depth. Both would walk into our team and most others at this level.

Opposition Weak link: None. They beat us easily. No one played bad and they all won their own individual battles. The lad Boly looks a bit clumsy but we did not test him.

Moore 4/10 – He was maybe a 6 in the game with no chance on the goal, maybe could have done a bit better on the second and then some regulation saves but most misses just went wide or over. He was left badly exposed as they broke at numbers. The red card was moronic. Not sure he had to come and if he did he needed to either make sure he got there quicker and got on the ball or hold his ground. He just came out and missed the ball by miles and booted their man in the guts. It was awful and an easy red. We have gone mad over some really bad tackles this year such as Wallace, and the ones the Burton and Leeds players did. Moore’s was as bad as these. He went in very dangerously and could have seriously injured the player. It was awful. Lucky to only get 3 games really. If I was a Wolves fan I would be furious as he could have seriously injured our star man. Now with doubts over Blackman, young Eastwood may have to play a pressure cooker derby for his first league start. Fuming at Moore tonight. If Blackman does get back in and does ok; he should stay in as that was completely unprofessional.

Baldock 6.5/10 – Maybe our next best player to Holmes and I thought he was not great! Defensively at least a lot of their attacks came down our side early on and he left some space. He did get forward well at times and won some free kicks and at least tried to turn the defenders but no decent final balls came in. He too looked stretched by the end.

Stevens 4/10 – Poor again. Sloppy with his marking and sloppy when he defended. He often just lumped it or played it blind to no one in particular. He also was slow to react to things and failed to stop the cross. He fouled a lot and was just really slow all game in everything he did. He is badly out of form at the moment and not sure how he has stayed in the team. Only the fact Lafferty is probably even worse has saved him but that should not be a reason to not make a chance. He has been shocking now for 2 months and keeps getting picked.

Basham 5/10 – Another poor performance. He was made to look a mug by more skilled and quicker players on a number of occasions. They got away from him two or three times due to his immobile play and his inability to react. Felt he could have done better twice on the second goal. Did a bit better in midfield but still gave it away a lot and never really got amongst it. We were stood off all game. Summed him up second half when he played that pass straight to Baldock clearly offside. Is a trier but looks way off standards of top of the table players at this level at the moment and one we may need to upgrade if we want to stay in the upper end of this league as great as he has been for the club.

O’Connell 6/10 – He had an ok game and we lost 3-0 and the defence was at full stretch. At times made to look daft by good skill but often he was having to chase back or turn and try and run with nimble players. Kept plugging away and one of the few whose head did not drop. Ended up with a back four and not sure we were any worse. They created quite a few chances with a 3 and quite a few with a 2 but maybe most came when it was ten men.

Stearman 6/10 – I thought he tried manfully but as with the other defenders could not live with the movement but much of this was in front of him and the defence had no protection. He looked at full stretch at lot but good players do that. Not sure I could blame him too much for the defeat; and I could say same about O’Connell. They broke at speed and skill and hard when defenders are turned the other way; something we do not do.

Evans 6/10 – Not as good as the other night as Wolves passed it around our midfield and we looked like statues at times. He did ok in spells but did not influence game that much attacking or defensively. Off the ball they had so much time and space and the midfield did not communicate meaning they just picked us off with one pass with a big gap in behind. When we got it, we played it sideways and backward and never really looked like moving it into the last third. It was so slow and whilst him and Fleck did not give it away lots, they did not advance the ball and eventually someone just pumped it long or played an errant pass. I was hoping for some athleticism, power, running or goals in midfield or failing that a real hard nut that protected the back four and have us a base. Not sure any of the three (Leonard and Lundstram) give us any of that from what I have seen so far but early doors. We have spent say 2 millon approx. combined on those three but they all do look much of a muchness. As I say still time though and we will wait and see.

Fleck 5/10 – One of his poorest games for the Blades. The Wolves players picked off his intentions too easy and read his jink backs or square passes. He was really slow and sloppy all game. I felt that we needed him to be at his best to have a chance and he put in a stinker for me. Love Fleck but he is not the same players without Coutts and Duffy. Today he looked tired and lacked the drive and belief we have seen. He seemed to know that we were not going to have the ball in key areas and just sort of played it safe. It was all very conservative and we never got into their last third consistently all game.

Holmes 7/10 – Our best player by a long way. He got on the ball and tried to run at players or make things happen. Only white shirt who tried to penetrate or actually get on it and make things happen. Not everything worked for him and he had two wild shots but at least he had efforts. His work rate surprised me as he really got up and down. Not sure why he came off. He looked more energised than the rest of them so fatigue could not be an excuse? Maybe Wilder was saving him for next week?

Wilson 4/10 – Not impressed at all. He had one turn and shot but overall behind his man and loomed off the pace. When he had it, the ball came off him and we need to play from the front but their defenders had so much time to bring it out. Second half I am not sure he touched the ball. He looked completely disinterested. He jogged about and when we lost it just sort of sauntered around. He is out of contract at Man Utd and should be busting his guts out after two spells at this level where he failed to cut the mustard at Derby and Brighton. Where does he expect his career to go if he fails to convince in a third spell at this level? He would be heading to the lower leagues.

Clarke 6/10 – No service whatsoever and seemed to get frustrated with teammates and was throwing his hands up in the air. He tired hard to start with but then as the game went he kind of gave up with the rest of the team. He did not have many balls to feet and nothing to run onto either. However, he failed to get in front of the ball yet again and Coady beat him to it first on a number of occasions. I said it in the week but not sure he is doing enough for me for our so-called talisman. That maybe harsh but his shirt barely had a mark on it at the end. He needs to lift his energy levels even if he gets little service. Not looked like scoring for quite a few games. Not a captain type for me; especially when he is berating others for poor passes as he did quite a bit today.

    Subs:

Leonard – Played a few square balls and chased after a few of their players. About the same as the rest of them! To be fair the game had gone by this point as red card came soon after.

Donaldson – Not really in the game. We were defending and trying to keep the score down further.

Eastwoood – Not the best of starts. Least he got an early touch! No chance on the deflected goal. Then missed a cross and looked a bit at sea as balls whizzed in. A few other chances just went past the post. May have to start next week now.

Manager: Wilder 5/10 – Changed the team again and shows he is a bit desperate and is chopping and changing odd players with no real reward. Holmes actually came in and did well today and then was taken off which was odd. I felt tactically though he got it badly wrong and we had 2 in midfield v a three (as Holmes played more forward) and they won all the loose stuff and then when attacked it was 3 v 3 at times. We looked so open and it could have been more than 2-0 at half time. He changed it and put Basham in and we did a bit better but never looked like scoring. His two other subs made no difference but happened just before Moore’s moment of madness. I do think Wilder is becoming very stubborn with his formation and the attitude ‘I won’t change it; it has worked for us for the last year or so.’ I love the man but it is not working at the moment and has not for 2 months. We are not getting the centre backs forward; the wing backs are ineffective attacking wise and the midfield are not seeing enough of the ball. We are not creating as many clear chances either. It is not working whether it is due to players being off form, energy levels sapping but we are not pressing in the same way and with and without the ball do not look the same. He needs to change it. He seems to be just trotting out the same thing week after week and expecting different results. I think not having Duffy has not helped matters and is silly he is not starting him. Also 2 or 3 others are lucky to keep getting picked.

I think Basham and Stevens form have both been poor for some time and others deserve a chance but then he keeps rotating other players. The Wilson introduction has not improved things. He scored at Norwich but has not looked any better than Sharp or Donaldson. He signs Lundstram and says he is a key man but then drops him and then does the same with Leonard. I am not sure whether he knows his best team and seems to be just rotating for the sake of it. Some of the players he has left out have not been as bad as many that are staying in. Much of this criticism may seem harsh but our form has been really poor and either the tactics, personnel or how we set up is not working at the moment. Maybe teams have just worked us out. Maybe we are just knackered but whatever it is, we are nowhere near the side we were but I am not sure Wilder has done enough quickly enough to address this. He had still done a phenomenal job and it is madness that he is getting any kind of criticism but that is football; you lose a lot of games and questions get asked. Sometimes, it can be just that players and other teams are better but we can try and control what we can ourselves of course.

Officials – Ref gave us nothing all game. We did not deserve anything though. They were quicker to the ball, competed more and just out footballed us. Only one moment when Baldock was fouled and maybe a corner we should have had; could I point to. The rest of the game not sure we could look at anyone but ourselves. Indeed; a number of our players should have been yellow carded for cynical fouls. Stearman did a shocker near the end. The Moore one was horrific and an easy call.

At least you came to try and play football, unlike some of the sides this season. Nevis by the way is only twenty and Jota twenty one. Gibbs-White, who came on as a sub is just nine****. You have proved you can play and you will win more than you lose before the end of the season. In reality this season should be about consolidation in the Championship.

Some good reports of the game.

Cheers mate and good luck in the Premiership. Sometimes it takes somebody to look in from the outside to see the true picture.
