Thread: Players I'd sell

  1. #1

    Players I'd sell

Ultimately when Hiwe took over Newcastle we were in the Mark Hughes era of Newcastle takeover..

Players such as Wood were bought and done a job and we stayed up..

    I've loved every minute since..

However.. I have no time for sentiment.. I do feel we need to push on this window and push for that top 6 next season.. its make or break for Eddie Howe I think..

I'd go with the following for sales:

    Dubz
    Lascelles
    Trippier
    Longstaff
    Almiron
    Wilson...

All either not good enough, too old or injury prone..

I get that some of these players others would keep, but you need to ask yourself which one would get in a current top 6 side?

I have a feeling Longstaff will have a good this, season coming up, and I would keep Tripps for his leadership qualities alone, but at the same time expecting him to be going for his coaching badges that lad, who gives more than most, would be a huge asset to the coaching staff.

I agree it's make or break for Eddie.

if we don't get 4th, I think he'll be off. As will Bruno, Isak and probably Botman.

Hard to overestimate the importance of this season.

Hopefully 5th will be enough for Champo.
    I wouldnt sell much.

Basically, we have only cups for rotation next season. So, main focus should be the quality of the squad, not depth.
I’d keep the players who provide that depth - Longstaff, Trips, may be Wilson. And invest heavily on starting XI quality

As for Miggy - I think he should go. We have Murphy as back up for that position and should bring top player for RW.
Same goes for Lascelles. Assuming we have Kelly, Schar, Botman as CB, Burn also. May be new top CB is also a top target.
Also, I’d keep either Dubs or Karius, but Karius is gone and if Dubs wants first team, then so be it. We should bring someone cheap, who past his best, for 1-2 seasons as back up

Lascelles is out injured till at least Novemeber remember.

We couldn't sell him even if we want to.

Miggy I think at this point I would push to sell - he's one of our more viable sellable assets that doesn't impact the team with his loss as much as others.

As mentioned, Lascelles is gonna be with us due to injury. Out of the rest I'd keep Tripz & Longstaff for the 24/25 season.

However, Longstaff's contract is up next summer. So I would be open to moving him on for a fee of £17.5+ million.

Moving Longstaff on would mean we have 6 CMFs. The starting 3, Tonali, Bruno & Joelinton. Anderson, Willock & Miley.

It's enough but we don't have a genuinely defensive minded CMF. If the club wanted to bring in a more specialised DMF, the Longstaff money will assist in that acquisition.

Miggy, Wilson, Dubz all have to go and I really do hope that the club can move them on early in July. Along with Hayden, Lewis & Fraser.

Whilst we do need to maintain a solid group at the core of the squad, there is no room for sentiment in the top level of football. We need to move players on to bring in players who are going to take us to the next level.

Tripz I'd keep for that leadership rolls, contrary to direct comment above. We are bereft of winners in the group.

Tonali has won - Seria A in 21-22 season.
Bruno has won - Coupe de la Ligue 19-20, Olympic gold in 2020 & Copa do Brasil 18-19
Tripz has won - La Liga 20-21 and been to the UCL final with Spurs & the European Championship final with England

We lost to the red filth in the League Cup final due to a lack of experience in finals. We need to have more winners in the mix with our younger highly ambitions and quality younger first teamers. Outside of those 3 we really don't have that profile of player in the squad.

    Just a thought.

The calibre of player we'd have to bring in to make the sale of Longstaff worthwhile would be Éderson from Atalanta.

Not sure that deal makes financial sense at this point when we have more pressing needs in other positions to fix first.

But we need a “ squad” and they can’t all be Bruno’s and isaks, we will need the foot soldiers in there so we have to be careful.

I would hope that in a few years we could be aiming for a City scenarion where we have 2 squads of equally skilled players.
