    Brentford Nightmares

For some reason the name Povey was on my mind when I woke up. I remember the ****age excitement of the first game of the season at Griffin Park, we'd signed Bly and this tricky winger Povey and this was the year we were going up to the 2nd tier. My Dad and I went down, August 1963 and as per usual on away games we sat in the stands.

Well it didn't take long to come down to earth, lost 4-1 on the day and apart from the excitement of the League Cup (when it counted for something) down we went again to the basement division and to some of the most torrid times this club has known in my history.

18,000 to watch the next game at home to Coventry and lost 0-3.

Last game of the season saw less than 3,000 v QPR. A lot of p1ssed off supporters that season and I'd guess many never came back, at least not regularly.

I remember that season only to well the Coventry game was midweek under lights think Jimmy Hill may have been their manager and thay were a good side got promoted and we were relegated under player/manager Eddie Lowe he brought in Terry Bly who had scored goals for fun everywhere he played but was a complete flop with us.

Looking at the stats (per upthemaggies’ site), that was a dreadful season. We started with 7 defeats in the first 8 games and finished with 1 win in the last 19. We lost 28 matches and conceded 92 goals!

We were never out the bottom 3 all season, except after the return game against Brentford which we won 1-0 and rose to the giddy heights of 21st in the table. The end of the season saw us 12 points from safety and sent down for our second spell in the basement division.

63/64 was among our absolute worst starts to a season, it's the only time we've opened a campaign with 5 straight defeats and it wouldn't have helped that Fword hit the ground running under a new manager that season and were top of the top flight at the end of September.
If it's true that a significant number of supporters watched both clubs during the post-war attendance boom then such circumstances in the Autumn of 1963 may well have prompted the end of that arrangement. The gate figures and financial crisis that followed the relegation would suggest as much.

We didn't play Brentford for years after Sirrel got us promoted to the 2nd tier in the same year they went down to the 4th. I'll be one of many who's first experience of the Bees was another unhappy occasion, losing 4-0 at home with a loan keeper making his debut, we were 3-0 down at HT and then came a downpour in strong winds lashing the rain into our faces underneath the County Road stand roof. I was soaked to the bone. That's the first thing I think of when Brentford are mentioned.

You are right PJ, Hill was the manager, I remember Coventry bought a lot of fans with them. Bly was way past his sell by date when he signed for us. I can remember him missing a penalty at the Meadow lane end, it might have been against Shrewsbury?? It was that bad it bounced about 3 times and took about 10 seconds to roll wide of the post
We had players like Vic Povey, Benny Docherty and can remember hearing Dick Edwards swearing and shouting to Povey, what's a matter Vic aren't you effing playing with us today---happy days.

I remember my old man taking me to Brentford on my first ever trip to London. Must have been about 1970. We had planned to visit The Tower Of London but being a bank holiday it was closed , great planning Dad ! I think the game ended in a draw but then again we might have lost 4-0 , I was still heartbroken at not seeing any Beefeaters!

That was probably Good Friday 1973. Brentford 1 Notts 1 in what for us was a ***** match in the promotion push. I can remember Roy Brown being clattered by one of their forwards a few minutes from time. If memory serves correctly, he was taken off and one of the outfield players went in goal. It might have been Bob Worthington but I’m not sure (definitely not Willie Carlin). The last few minutes were unbelievably tense as Notts held on for a draw.

The remaining three matches were all at home. Brown was out for the season and Eric McManus took over in goal. A draw with Blackburn and wins over S****horpe and Tranmere saw us up on the final day.

Very hazy memories here, but was that a game that kicked off at around 11:15am due to being on Good Friday? All I can remember from being at an away game at Brentford is a very early kick off, a 1-1 draw, and a woman with the most annoying voice in the world screeching "Cammon Beeeeees" every two minutes (no segregation in those days).

And I'd made the mistake of letting my now ex-wife set the date for our wedding, Sat 28th. Should've gone to the Tranmere match instead

Thanks to Frigiliana and Elite for that , the memories are trickling back . I thought it was a draw and I do remember the early kick off because we had to get up at the crack of dawn for the 40mph drive down to London! One of the first away games I ever went to along with Darlington ( their old ground, feethams I think it was called, use to double up as a cricket ground ) . I also remember going to Port Vale in my early days and because everybody had black and white scarfs I thought Notts fans were everywhere, until my old man put me right that is .
