A bit of nostalgia, Alan Clarke & 1978

I know we've all got our thoughts and worries about the 'here and now', and this means this Sunday's massive crunch match at Derby. (and believe me I havent forgot about the importance of this match and its implications etc!).

But I do still always like looking back to former memories of our club, and it makes me think back to those former glory days in the late 70s, when footy hadnt been spoiled with money and Tv like it is today.
Alan Clarke had some brilliant ideas didnt he, to make the players believe in themselves and his new and fresh ideas really seemed to work wonders because we won promotion in that first season.
Taking them down the pits with the miners to show them what real hard work was like, and getting extra staff in to clean their kits and boots etc. All this was to get them to realise how lucky they were to be paid footballers, and to realise their importance to this football club.

Wow, do we really see that sort of superb detail in man-management anymore ?.

You said it all mate..... Spoiled with money and tv. Plus the fact that that Money won’t let Managers be Managers like they were.
The money men want control, and we have seen the last of the Old Style Manager .... they just won’t put the money in the Managers hands anymore....

Incidentally.... who was the last “Old style Manager” you reckon....?
The motivator, signer of players, visitor of young prospects hand talking to their fathers).......

Thats a tough one Jules, and Im not sure actually.
I always liked Brian Clough as a neutral in my early years of being a footy fan, because he knew how to get the best out of each individual, whether they were that good or not etc.
I seriously think Alex Ferguson is over rated and I refuse to call him 'Sir' by the way. And this is because I dont think he and Wenger and Mourinho and Guardiola etc, would be able to bring a team up from the Conference without the money and the star players that they are used to working with.

I think you are a little unkind with Fergie acido in my opinion .

Just remember the point he started with Man Utd wasn't great and ok they had money but nothing like today .

They were miles behind Liverpool when he took over and gates had dropped to 35k and below 30k for some games .

The first thing he did was to appoint more scouts and build up the youth system , it took time before the Beckham's Scholes , Giggs , Neville's and Butt's came along .

He wasn't everyone's cup of char but now Wenger is leaving Arsenal these two will probably be the last managers who stay at clubs for over twenty years and take those clubs to another level and be allowed that kind of control .

Both these two spring to mind as the archetypal Manager. Clough too.
Warnock, who I can’t stand does the motivational, part. But I’m sure isn’t the type to go round a young lads house for a chat with his father before he signs.......as in the old days when kids were sent to clubs because the father had done the deal with said Manager, which may have involved a new car or three piece suite!!!
I’d say our last one was Johnny Steele....

I’d probably plump for Paisley as beingnthe last of the “Old School” or Ron Saunders from Villa

Maybe Animal, but if Im honest and for various other reasons, I couldnt care less about that despicable ManUre club and Fergiescum.

I still want to know if he (and all these other over rated top flight managers) could bring a team up from the lower leagues, with NO money and NO world class players etc.

It might sound ridiculous, but what would these so called brilliant managers or coaches do at Halifax or York for example ?.

I seem to recall that Warnock, who is a qualified chiropodist, years ago used to attend to his players feet when necessary

As they say the trouble with Man Utd is the fans.... For me it’s the arrogance of the fans that give the club a bad name.
Ref Fergie, he had little money at St Mirren and don’t think he had loads at Aberdeen either. Thing I actually liked about him was he defending his players to the hilt publicly but wasn’t afraid to dig them out privately and clearly had the respect of the players especially the younger ones who all admit to him being a father figure
