We are definitely a counter attacking team and as I said if we can not

It seems to me there are increasingly only two kinds of decent teams 1) Attacking and 2) Counter attacking, and there isn't much ability to switch between the two. Now, I don't recall this being the case in the old days (1970's), though those of you who know more about the game might disagree. Attacking teams have much possession and high quality 'magicians' that can unlock tight defences. Counterattacking teams have good organisation, solid defences and the ability to counter with strength and pace. Teams that have neither languish. Blues seems to be counter attacking (tho' I have only watched highlights this season) and so, when we play away, the home team plays to our strength and we do well. At home, we end up with possession and lack the top quality players to unlock defences - even fragile ones like today. Not many teams can afford the top quality magicians, but I wonder if Blues do have the potential to be such a side with the likes of Toral, Gray and even Shinnie in our midst?

agreed defo counter attack however at home we can not play that way in front of the home supportes
I think we're a mid table team. We will continue to pick up good results but not enough of them. We are string in midfield but Donaldson needs a goal scoring ally and the defence to me still looks a bit ropey for us to mount a serious challenge; especially if we continue to have such patchy form at St Andrews it seems currently the visitors are unwilling to take a chance.
We need a different type of CF to Donaldson if we are to try and win by placing teams under pressure - a Mikael Forssell type would do...
Exellent question, and well put. The answer has to be counter attacking, unfortunately, which is not good to watch but Rowett has probably employed to best suit the players at his disposal. There is a third option, may I humbly suggest, which Barcelona and Spain have used in recent years which is to play it slowly but maintain constant posession, which involves movement off of the ball and players skilled enough to unlock the opposition by sheer genius in the final third of the pitch. This also can be frustrating at times when constant posession does not produce the goals. This is often derogatorily referred to as "tippy, tappy" football. Brian Clough also used this system.
The first method that you referred to is undoubtedly the "attack, attack attack" option which requires both skill and speed. Certainly in my lifetime the most atractive football that Blues played, which incidentally attracted huge crowds, was when we had Gordon Taylor speeding down rhe wing aligned with the speed
