    O/T Aldi alternatives.....

Bare with me on this one.

I have always looked for a bargain when shopping (Yorkshire lad) and my earlier days always saw me at at the local Asda or Morrisons.

I'm not a snob but like wining and fine dining, where possible, travelling abroad as much as I can but eh, I've worked and saved damn hard to do this. My non claim to shame these days? I shop at Aldi's and why not. I find they are bringing in more fine brands than ever albeit not household advertised names, so what. If it delivers to what I desire and it fits the bill, that'll do me fine.

I have friends who have mentioned dining at Miller and Carter and have been a couple of times. Great food, wines and beers and at a reasonable cost. Reason why I mention Miller and Carter is through recent experience where I shared a Chateaubriand with my Son at a cost of £33.00 each. Imagine my surprise when yesterday shopping at Aldis, they have a great 21 day matured Chateaubriand for £9.99. The taste is exquisite.

I also like a nice G & T and Aldis own is, Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin for £14.99 a litre. This Gin won a Gold award in 2018 against many well known brands. Now to accompany this, Aldi have now introduced, to combat Fever Tree, (stupidly over priced) a cucumber and mint light tonic water under the label of Ridge Valley. Very moderately priced at £1.25 for a 750ml bottle.

Apologies for rattling on but, for me it is no shame to shop at Aldi's and judging by their plan to open a store every week in the UK for the next 12 months, it will soon bring the big names Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsburys into line.

Does anyone else shop at Aldi's or for that fact Lidl? They also provide exceptionally well priced food and will soon be having their great Xmas food deals like Aldi.

Been shopping at Lidl since that one near the railway station opened but shop at a different one now.

Always preferred it to Aldi as their fruit and veg was better but it's not as good as it was, mouldy oranges and tangerines seem common.

Plus stay away from the pastries and doughnuts in summer, always loads of flies about, attracted to the sugar.

Aldi and Lidl's chocolate is pretty good.

We’ve always shopped at Morrisons but although I’ve never set foot in an Aldi’s store I like them because since they opened a store 500 yards from my Morrisons in Bramley, Morrisons have dropped all their prices!

Yep definitely Brin. Which magazine still rate both Aldi and Lidl very highly with regard to value for money. Always find LIdl good for bread and fruit and veg. Aldi good for the same. Believe both were rated more highly than Morrisons ,Tesco and Asda -Asda being worse i believe-by which.

Loyal my local Aldi is at Parkagte, however, I have shopped at the Bramley Aldi as I have family living nearby. Give it a try you'll be well surprised.

The Torchon ham albeit French, is the best ham I have ever tasted and I've ate some choice hams over the years. Also give their Caledodnian extra mature cheddar cheese...stunning!

As an after thought, I called in Asda on Friday last to buy some spices as I felt Aldi didn't stock them, namely Garlic Salt and Onion granules. I paid 85p a jar. Imagine my surprise when I called in at Aldi and saw their version at 45p a jar, almost half price!

IF you can afford it subscribe to which magazine Brin. Aldi and Lidl products are ofter reviewed alongside big name brand products and often come out on top. Stuff like mayonaisse, sun cream, xmas puds, sweet pickle.batteries, gin etc have been related more highly.

Roly, don't need the magazine pal I shop there almost every week and their supplement mags are there for shoppers to take. One thing they did last year was to offer an exceptional Xmas brochure that cost a lot to print but apparently it was a winner so look out for this again around the start of November in store.

Lidl are great for meat, excellent quality and good prices too.
King prawns £1.79 a tray, nearly £3.00 for the same in major supermarkets.
Sometimes the veg can be a bit hit and miss, but the salad produce I’ve always found to be very good.
Fill your boots with the alcohol, Irish Cream Liqueur at £6.99 is good and a great selection of bottled and canned beers at excellent prices.
Another big plus is the fact that they don’t have you waiting at the checkout too long, they open and close tills to accommodate customer numbers.
A few months ago Aldi had Grim Reaper Sausages on a promotion, these contained some California 🌶, they were hot, anyone else try them?.
