    football as a business

We have a month of shut downs and suddenly it dawns on authorities how unviable football is as a business.

This might come across as harsh, but I sincerely hope one of the PL or Championship bigger spenders go bust. All we are witnessing is something we at Oakwell have known for years - that football needs to get its house in order

Its no coincidence that the better run clubs financially are generally the least successful

As a business owner (and nothing flash) its not rocket science to me - I need my company to have more coming in than going out, this will result in a profit.

FFS PL and EFL, get your acts together and start demoting teams for huge losses and maybe then - and only then, will we see clubs towing the line

Any club furloughing staff should start next season on minus 10 points unless they have a very good reason.
It will be interesting when Spurs put their first big transfer offer in.
Bury, Bolton etc had points deducted when they couldn't pay their staff.

I agree that bigger clubs and all Premier League clubs shouldn’t be furloughing employees but the smaller ones could go out of business easily with no income

    Something has to give.
Non league clubs are professional now, some players on £1,000's a week.
Is that a good thing - I don't think so.
Non-league clubs overspending to get into the league. Championship clubs overspending to get into the Prem. Prem clubs overspending to stay up, or to get into Europe.
Perhaps this is something that needed to happen.
Some of my first visits to Oakwell were to see Bradfoed PA, Southport, Barrow, Stockport & Workington. Where are they now?
Notts County, the oldest club dropped out of the league. Did anyone shed a tear?
If some clubs go out of business, others will replace them.
I used to hate it when clubs went out of the league. I was a traditionalist but I've got hardened to it now.
I used be outraged when players dived for penalties and rolled around feigning injuries but nobody's bothered now.
I haven't been to Oakwell for months and I never watch MOTD anymore.
I cancelled Sky sports a few few back and I don't know if I'll renew.
Perhaps the drama of a few big clubs going into administration might whet my appetite again.
Football clubs aren't bothered about fans, why should fans bother about them?

I agree with all that and feel the same.

This lockdown has brought many things to light. People might start actually seeing how stupidly ridiculous football and the money involved has become.

I agree with you Pass but when all this is over the forces of greed will once again rule the roost & in due course football aided by the likes of Sky/BT not forgetting the great British public of course will return as before
It may take a while but it's the nature of the beast

That will be the case as you say where football is concerned unfortunately Exile. However, I'd like to think that the general publics view on the NHS will change for the better.

After a few months when it is time to pay the Govt the money back I fear it will be the bottom three quarters of the wealth spectrum who will bear the brunt, as it was in "the austerity years" of 2010 to 2019. It was the very same people who are now relying on and praising the NHS,Social Care and Public Service workers who were voting to cut their funding and freeze their wages,
The merchant bankers and hedge fund managers will be the ones who flourish again quickly and again be regarded with greater status than the key workers.
I would love to see a change in society where key workers are valued and paid relatively much more than now Pass but I fear once the outbreak is over it will be back to scenes seen in the last ten years of Tories cheering votes in the House when cuts are implemented.

( A bloke up the road who is a locksmith says he should be regarded as a "key worker")

You'd like to think that after the Tory PM spent a few neets in hospital in intensive care that his policy may change. Nowt like a brush wi potential death to change one's philosophy. However, I won't hold my breath.

My uncle lost his long term partner to this virus yesterday, it was very sudden. She woke up, couldn't breathe and died in the ambulance on way to hospital. It was initially a suspected heart attack but has since been confirmed that covid19 was the cause.
