    Player ratings v Grimsby

Jaros 6.5 - encouraging debut, great save from the ludicrous penalty and let down by his defenders for the goals.
Brindley 6 - some good blocks and tried to get forward.
Lacey 5.5 - started well, struggled a bit when they got into gear.
Cameron 6 - not everything went his way, but can't fault his effort.
Richardson 5 - posed problems early, but was anonymous for much of the game.
Palmer 5.5 - probably his least effective game in a Notts shirt, well below his usual standard.
Brunt 5 - the odd good pass, but had less impact as the game progressed.
Roberts 8* - quality goal, and our main attacking threat throughout.
Taylor 6 - got involved, but struggled to find the final ball.
Rodrigues 5 - the odd moment of class, but yet again mostly ineffective.
Wootton 5 - didn't get a lot in terms of service, but offered minimal threat.

Vincent 5 - didn't offer much when he came on.
Sam 6.5 - more good moments than bad, better then most.

A very disappointing defeat after looking good for the first 30 minutes. After that, we were simply outthought and outfought. We had a midfield who were decent when they had the ball, but were very poor when they didn't. This game highlighted all of our weaknesses, and we need to accept that pretty football sometimes doesn't work at this level if we are to keep our season alive. We don't need hoofball, but we need to mix it more.

The ref was awful, but he wasn't the reason we lost. The penalty he awarded was one of the most ridiculous decisions I've seen for a very long time, and once he decided that Lacey had committed a foul for the free kick that led to their winner it surely had to be a red card rather than a yellow.

Thanks Elite, wasn't there today but when I can make it your marks are very similar to mine.

Looks like a real off day for too many. Only one of 7 or higher tells a story.

Ruben and Wootton have really gone off the boil. Need to get their heads down and ignore the rumours etc.

Pretty much covers it for me. Brindley maybe 1 less because I’m not a fan of his. Overall, not good enough.
Rodders a 4.5 as well. Not good enough and hasn’t been for a few weeks.

I’d change a few of the scores. The new keeper didn’t save the penalty as it hit the post (unless my eyes really did let me down). His distribution and handling wasn’t great. He made a decent save when tipping on to the bar. That said, he didn’t cover himself in glory. 6
Wootton was awful. Should have been subbed. Absolute waste of a shirt today. Zero goal threat. Little hold up play. An all round lethargic display. Though he wasn’t alone.

Jaros - 5.5 - Distribution clearly above this level and the main reason he’s been brought in, but could’ve done better with both goals imo - particularly the first. Feels like an unnecessarily unsettling move to bring him straight in over Slocombe, a perfectly capable keeper at this level.

Brindley - 6 - Struggled a bit when pressed second half. One excellent last ditch tackle first and contributed to our good attacking play down that side.

Lacey - 6 - Probably our best defender on the day, a tad unlucky for the free kick for the winner. Overall I think we do miss Rawlinson’s ‘head it, kick it’ qualities at the back and have over prioritised on the ball ability over actually defending.

Cameron - 5.5 - Similar to the two above, looked susceptible at times. Great coming forward but is that what you want from a centre back?

Richardson - 6 - Hasn’t quite been the same since the break in fixtures after such a blistering start. We were dominant down his side first half but that was largely down to Roberts. Had one chance second half but turned back instead of shooting.

Palmer - 6.5 - Think the OP assessment is a bit harsh. Did the messy stuff well in midfield where he was largely left on his own.

Brunt - 5 - Doesn’t look strong enough defensively to play in an orthodox midfield two. Didn’t massively contribute; worry he’s too similar to what we’ve already got and not what was needed.

Taylor - 6 - Probably a standard performance from him as excellent going forward but struggled the other way.

Roberts - 8 - Great goal and a constant threat, back in his regular position. Could’ve got another and deserved at least one assist. Destroyed the LB first half before they doubled up on him and killed our only threat second half.

Rodrigues - 5.5 - Didn’t look like he suited the deeper role - the issue is it seems both one of him and Cal has to be out of position when we play the back 3. That said, hasn’t really been himself for a few months - is way off where he was at the end of last season. Missed a sitter at 1-0.

Wootton - 5 - Really, really quiet. One of the easiest games their centre halves will have this season.

Vincent - 6 - Usual energy in difficult circumstances. Has been unlucky to have lost his place.

Sam - 7 - Thought he did really well, offered a threat and helped turn the tide in our favour.

Mitchell - 6 - Too little time to judge.

Not at all happy with Wootton and Rodrigues and i'm afraid Brunt does not have the same energy as Vincent, Would like to see Sam start on Tuesday.

I don't think Rodrigues was supposed to be playing deep as such. The idea seemed to be to have him and Roberts playing either side of Wootton, with license to roam wide or carry the ball inside, which Cal enjoyed, but Ruben just looked lost. The problem with Rodrigues is that he's not a wide player and nor is he really a second striker, even though his goals have tempted IB to use him as such. Some of the best games I've seen him play were in the middle of the park where he's surprisingly willing to get stuck in, and from there he can make late runs and attack the box undetected/untracked. I wouldn't want to play him in a 2-man midfield though, you would definitely need three in there.

    This.

The midfield was like a square with Palmer/Brunt holding and Ruben/Cal off Wootton. Clearly benefited Cal, but Ruben got lost. There was a lack of energy from Ruben, did he get lost in the system?

I would like to Ruben deeper and more central. I would like to see 4-2-3-1. Slightly off the main topic, ratings.

Richardson and Brunt, more so Brunt have concerned me last couple of games. No doubt they have ability, but it’s their application.

Lacey has been poor last few games. Poor positioning, switching off in and out of possession.

I'd like to see Sam given a go in a front two

    Brindley, Cameron, Lacey,Chicksen
    Robert's, Palmer, Vincent, Richardson
    Wootton. Sam

    Robert's and Richardson swapping occasionally

I think Rodriguez needs a rest or at least a kick up the arse

I would have no qualms in freshening up the front line. Sam deserves a start, Cairo needs to be given a starting role , Wooton needs a rest and either rodders or Robert's the role of a free attacking reign...!
