I was always led to believe the red poppy was supposed to represent the blood spilled on the battlefields of the first world war, and that was the blood of of all nations involved on both sides of that conflict. It was nothing to do with whatever side you were on, but it has been hijacked by people to further a sectarian argument, ie the Loyalists v Republicans in Ireland and to a slightly lesser extent in the west of Scotland.
