Sure - great pro, honesty, a trier and all the rest of it, but can't we focus on effectiveness or the lack of it?!

You're right, though. I would have released him two summers ago, but certainly he should have gone to America last summer. I'm not saying he doesn't make a contribution and score a few important goals, but inevitably he's creaking and slowing a little more every season.
Both Stead and Shola Ameobi ran out of steam over winter last year and never full recovered, and in recent weeks there have been signs again that Stead's sharpness isn't there. He never stops trying, and he'll still get the odd goal, but he's a shadow of the player his name and reputation suggests. We've squeezed out the very last drops from Stead's illustrious career, and it's all but over.
