Maybe but you only need to look at Caen to see they were not going to give ground and hold every inch they could for as long as they could, without a pursuing army bombing alone would have meant that every major strategic city they fell back too and allowed to dig in at would have to be leveled at huge cost to the civilian population at the same time as 10,000+ people a day could have been exterminated in the camps.
" a huge cost to the civilian population " - it was whitty.....being as "Monty" (Falaise Failure) couldn't take Caen - they decided to carpet bomb it back to rubble - with the loss of + 3000 french...the liberation of Normandy costing another 19 thousand Civilians...then there was the pre-invasion bombing that caused the deaths of 10s of thousands more...they call it - Collateral Damage !

He thinks the Red Flag should be our national anthem.

I think that all MPs should live in Social Housing so that they can either get to know or remember just what life is like for lots of people.
Our local MP, an ex-Miners' leader, has moved away form his roots in Ashington and now lives in an area which is full of houses owned by footballers and others receiving silly money. I won't even go into what a lot of people think of how it was funded.

Norder --I wonder where we would be now if D-Day had not happened? I speak fluent German and also have a good knowledge of Russian and, being a musician, I would have had no problem in either environment.
Totally hypothetical question, because none of us know and none of us were in a situation where we had to make the decision. It is just all part of history and there have not been many conspiracy theories put forward about it either.

You're going soft you lefties BT, you'd actually let them live. What's wrong with a bullet in the back of the head, or piano wire and lamp-posts. Too much easy living in a capitalist society, I suppose we can forget a revolution then ?

Sub.....If D-Day hadn't happened ?....or where would we be now if the 2WW had never happened ?.....say before the Young plan ? (Owen.D.Young - General Electric) German reparation payments, Hyperinflation....and Banking crash leading to the rise of Hitler and National Socialism.....or the doings and dealings of Standard Oil ? - IG Farben....The Swiss BIS (Bank of International Settlements)....etc etc....but I digress - there's the above Strategic Bombing Campaign "quote" Albert Speer (Minister of Armaments and War Production) had the raids been continued, "Armaments production would have been crucially weakened after two months and after four months would have been brought completely to a standstill.".....had they gone in another direction....say Operation Rankin perhaps - the Med/Balkans/Norway etc.....or as Churchills and others opposition to Overlord and his preferred push through the Italian "soft underbelly"....then If we hadn't handed the reigns of War to the Americans......then perhaps today - the world would be a more peaceful place !

On 15 May 1944, at St Paul’s School, Hammersmith – General Montgomery’s temporary London headquarters – Winston Churchill attended a final D-Day briefing with King George VI and scores of Allied commanders. As Dwight D Eisenhower recalled in Crusade in Europe:

“During the whole war I attended no other conference so packed with rank as this one. This meeting gave us an opportunity to hear a word from both the King and the Prime Minister. The latter made one of his typical fighting speeches, in the course of which he used an expression that struck many of us, particularly the Americans, with peculiar force. He said Gentlemen, I am hardening toward this enterprise’,

Perhaps it's as well the Strategic Bombing campaign was curtailed for D Day preperations, the indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas on such a scale would surely constitute a war crime and trials in The Hague in this day and age. I'm not convinced it wasn't a war crime even back then.
