Thread: Your ultimate nightmare Notts County game

  1. #31
Another memorable game for me (for the wrong reasons) was when Stoke came to Meadow Lane on the final day of the season in 1979. They needed a win to get promoted so naturally brought a huge following.

I was 11 years old and my mates dad used to take us to matches. For some reason he always insisted on standing on the old Kop terrace even though it was for away fans at that time. There we were trying to stand in our usual spot behind the goal while 17,000 piissed up Stoke fans staggered, swayed and kept surging to the front causing us to be crushed against the barrier. I distinctly remember loads of Stokies drinking from beer cans and bottles and one of them took a slash right next to my leg! Me and my slightly older mate (both in Notts colours) feared for our lives until a Copper spotted us from pitch side, could see we weren't too comfortable and escorted us all to the relative safety of the old Main Stand terrace - much to the old man's annoyance. For me - I've never felt so relieved!

A horrible experience which could have put me off football for life...

For the record Stoke won 1-0 and got promoted in front of a crowd of 23,000. There's some good pictures here:

    A couple for me.

As a young ****ager in the 70’s being punched from behind by a Fulham fan much bigger and much older than me in the County Road stand.

In the early 80’s going to Bolton, played three card brag and my best hand on the entire journey was a pair if twos. I lost a few bob. On departing the coach one lot went under a railway bridge and one lot the other way around the ground. The ones that went under the railway bridge (not me thankfully) got battered and bruised by the locals and then a torrential downpour caused the game to be called off just before kickoff. The only good news was McCulloch was injured so we would have lost anyway!
