Someone I played football in the early 90s did the same. No one has any idea why to this day.

I hope so, but there is a limit. Players are employees of the club and as such are contracted to turn up for work. Absence should only be under exceptional circumstances.

We always try to show respect to people, brought our kids / grandkids up the same way.
Usually works fine on most occasions.
