    re: Scrapping the offside rule

Postman: Another great NASL rule was their draw match shootout.

The ball was given to one player at the center point on the offside line (discussed in previous comment) and the goalie was on his line. The player had 5 seconds to get the shot off.

It is SO much better that the penalty spot shootout.

Note #1 Take note of the offside line in the video of the shootout given below. ***Mentioned in earlier comment

Note #2 The Pigster NEVER provides this type of documentation with his stuff - view external link

I freely admitted in the original post it wasn't my idea.

Wasn't the NASL scrapped for some reason? I think it was unpopular due to too many stupid rules, or something.

Adding that extra line was merely an attempt to get Americans to feel comfortable watching the sport as the pitch would resemble an ice hockey pitch. I can't honestly understand what the benefit would be? Adding the line makes offside more complicated, not less.

FT - the 'blue line' was tried by the jocks in '74. Extended the 18 yard line of the penalty box to the touchline, you could only be offside in the last 18 yards of the pitch. Quickly scrapped. (technically, the halfway line is the 'blueline' as the law stands, you can only be offside in the attacking half.)

'Cannot be offside from a direct free-kick' has also been tried, end result was teams just packing the box/goalmouth every dfk. Again, was quickly scrapped as the games became farcical.

Offside rule is there for a reason, you just end up with a route one hoofball competition without it.

A route one hoofball competition like League Two at the minute?

There was an experiment back in the seventies where they had a line halfway between the centre line and the penalty box where you couldn't be off side, but it was short lived.

There was defense in the NASL. The Blueline was far enough from the Penalty Area to provide for a maintaining a reasonable facsimile of a D line impact on play. - It did stretch the field.

What about that Shoot Out? Great stuff, heh?

And Piggy, No, it was not because of the rules the league petered out. It was the lack of Americans who had played the game and therefore, learned appreciate it for the great game it is. Of course, this limited advertising interest as well. Only on-the-dole Ex-pats (Like Northern Lad, Markvich, Houston Blue & DC-United) and a host of other foreigners - who had come to Amerika looking for a free lunch and a free pot of gold - supported it.

The rules were super IMO - and they should be implemented internationally now.

The MLS is the fastest growing league in the world - 4 decades have made a difference. (It still in ****e football to watch when compared to the best Europe has to offer - I wish they would use the NASL rules, then I might even follo

The reason the MLS is a success is because they haven't tried to implement any crazy, stupid new rules.

It would be even more of a success if they had a proper league format where teams played each other home & away, scrapped the end of season playoffs and introduced a proper cup competition.

The MLS's problems stemmed from its artificial beginnings. (In fairness, there is some maturation going on now within the MLS - as its fan base has expanded and that Euro football is available on TV for all to easily view to educate its fans to the game.)

It was and still is a commercial corporate franchise based organization.

For years, it was run like a All Stat Wrestling or a Roller Derby league. (not sure if you will understand these faux-sports in the AmeriKan context).

It has trouble still with this. It is another decade away from any real maturity.

I don't view MLS football. It is a substandard product still.

And more importantly, it is a reactionary form of enterprise that is not in the interests of the people as well. It will be done away with too - when the people take state power.

Soon, we will have special reeducation camps for these entrepreneur class types and their sycophants hanger-ons.

One of the techniques to be used to reeducate them will surely be forc
