Broad Street was s'hite anyway, what they did there was deliberately miss an opportunity to help make the city center better.
What's next? cover the graveyard with more shops (well the same shops again) because it's not used the way it was.
Usually it is "out of city" shopping complexes that kills off a cities main shopping thoroughfare. Our council managed it with "in the city" shopping complexes.
Edit: "Destroying the city center even further was never really the most sensible of ideas." Did not stop them with Broad Street.
