The majority of these traders operate on very small margins , they source their stock through wholesalers and don't have the benefit of having huge distribution centres and can buy direct from manufacturers and take the middle man out of the margins .

They are sole traders , totally diferent trading agenda going on here as opposed to the big names trading elsewhere .

Once the building is totally devoid of traders then where is the economic benefit to BMBC ?

There is absolutely no way that new building justifies a 6k per annum increase to each and every trader , absolutely not .

This is Barnsley not fecking Oxford Street .

Wake up you morons .

How do you know what margins the market traders are operating on? How do you know what the cost of the new building means for the economics of the market and the implications for a fair rent?

And what about small traders in the vicinity of the market who will have to compete with the market traders? Why should the rent of market traders be subsidised by the taxpayer but not theirs?

Carncil need to evva look at thussens , greedy bastuds , car parking fees keep increasing , all this new housing allova the Borough bringing in millions , selling off old schools , playing fields etc , weer does all that money go ? I hope those market traders manage to earn a decent wage, but it's a hellova lotta money for the rents ,

It's a hard game is market trading these days roma , about 15 years ago when I was made redundant I gave it a go .

Don't get me wrong I made money but not near enough to justify working the hours I did , to tell the truth the Ebay side of what I was doing just about kept my head above water .

I was paying £50 a day out back then and on poor weather days you hardly took much more than covering your rent .

The saving grace was a sunday market at the other side of Gainsborough that was well worth the effort , otherwise it wouldn't have been worth the bother , it had to be to get up at 3am on a sunday morning in the middle of winter .

As a sole trader you have to give yourself at least one day off to replenish your stocks so you take nowt that day .

I worked it out that I was working around 80 to 100 hours , 7 days a week for less than minimum wage with no holiday or sick pay .

I'm glad I gave it a go because it was an experience and when you had a good day under your own steam it felt fantastic , really rewarding , when I packed it up I managed to recover a decent amount back on stock and the marquee / market stall I purchased but any financial gains were extremely minimal .

The worry and sleepless nights were another thing , stood there all day taking nothing really gets you down .

I'd be amazed if rents remain at those levels that those traders will be trading in 12 months time , it's unsustainable .

Admire thi Animal tha gave it a gu , an old family friend used to run White Rose Homebrew ont market fo abart 50 years, some days he took next to nowt , hardly worthwhile, but carried on he enjoyed the job/work meeting different people , the last increase in rents etc finished the business , sad that BMBC carnt see what damage they are doowin , a rethink is needed up int Tarn Hall , or the Town will be a Ghost town , with a large White Elephant ,

It's not my job to defend the council, but maybe it comes down to economics?

If the rents received don't cover the costs of running the market, every penny of subsidy would be a penny taken from tax payers that can't then be spent on other services.

And what of businesses who don't receive a subsidy in the form of below market value rents? How are they supposed to survive in the face of people who can knock out cheap Yorkies?

Well then they shouldn’t have undertaken such a lavish project that needs unsustainable rents from the traders to make it viable

I'd say butchers but they specialised in mostly cooked stuff. It used to be smack on a corner. Can't remember name though.
