I have been following all this colonialist nonsense on this thread, claims to historic sovereignty, claims to protect the citizens wishes and welfare and so on with interest. All the schoolboy "give it back its mine" etc etc.

Lets get the emotional tripe out of the way, its not about any historic rights at all, this is what it is about:

    OIL...and maybe some GAS too

Its about a 9% royalty on every $ of revenue generated by the oil mid majors. Its about a 26% tax take on future licences granted.

Its about building up a massive petroleum fund for the Falkland Isles government based on the Norwegian North Sea fund. That fund is now more than double the Greek National debt.

That's what its about - nothing to do with the historic rights etc

The "rights" argument is no more valid in this dispute than "WOMD" was in Iraq. Its black, its sticky and it will ultimately cause more wars than religion ever did.

The Popes line argument, though spurious, is however fascinating... using papal

I'd agree with a lot of that Roger.

Let's look at this as it should be.
The Falklands are inhabited. It's their oil and gas and FISHING.
One day they will go independant. If it's good enough for Scotland, then that's their choice.
The Argies are in such a **** state, they don't want that. They want the population off, so they can grab it.
So you could be right. WAR it will be eventually.

Lets be honest here, the islands have been used by four parties as a logistics base for shipping/whaling etc. That is all. The British colony is what you see, so it is theirs.
    What next?,
Argentina saying Antarctica is theirs, because they are closest?

If anyone has a right to the Falklands or Malvinas it is the peoples of Patagonia if there are any left after the Spanish onslaught of South America. Old fashioned colonization has come to an end though the nation states has given way to the Global Companies who have their eye on everything.Recently Australia took Japan to the international courts and won their case preventing Japan from commercial whaling in Antartica under the disguise of scientific research. It is doubtful whether the Globals will continue to respect the Antartica Treaty and similar ones for the Moon and outer space. I just hope that if they don't then ET will prove a much tougher opposition than the first peoples of this planet.
