Imagine what would happen if we were given a referendum on reintroducing capital punishment and the country voted to bring it back

Presumably we would resume hanging people

If that's what the majority wanted then what's the problem?

With today's DNA advances there would be much less chance of mistakes than in the past.

In fact you could make DNA evidence a condition of capital punishment to avoid mistakes altogether.

Leaving all other arguments against capital punishment aside, it is a scientifically accepted fact that DNA evidence is not foolproof. For example, police forensics can’t always be certain that the biological material they find at a crime scene actually was left there when the crime was committed. There is also the possibility of cross contamination.

    No foolproof but very accurate.

If not foolproof, then innocent people can still be executed

The same evidence is used for sentencing, therefore we have innocent people in the slammer. Does that mean let everyone off in case we make a mistake

Even if we get out they'll find a way to get us back in.

That's unless somehow the ruling elite are overthrown.
