The last time we were promoted we then finished 3rd in the Premier League.

    Exactly.

We'd have had the whole closed season to prepare for life in the top league. Hearts signed near enough a whole team last season and finished in the top 6 and were Scottish Cup finalists so it can happen.

Surely when we make it back our first priority is to stay up. No way we should be thinking top 6, although that would be acceptable

we finished 3rd.....we then fell away to constant bottom end finishes. The foundations have to be built properly, we need to get our youth system and the player conveyor belt put in place again . This was systematically destroyed by our previous owner trying to recover his families investment which has set our club back years. Our club is recovering from a period of being mismanaged and is needing to repair itself in every department so that it can prosper. I like the vision of the new owner and think that he is trying to put all these things into place. We had become a basket case club under Thompson and needed fully cleansed.....we had tried to paper over the cracks each season but with no success. As much as I would have loved to have been promoted this season, I will take another season in the championship if it means that the club has a better chance of prospering in the long term. We are very much a work in progress. I have faith that next season we will see a different dundee united and will be in a position to push on.

Just a question for the guys who are good at stats....which I clearly am not.
If the points Robbie won were pro rata across the entire season, would we have finished top?
Knowing that would let us know if it’s real progress or not
Apologies if it’s been asked before!

they are deluded to think that we wouldn't be scrapping to stay in that league next season. We have shown signs of recovery but we aren't good enough at the moment. I believe that we have fixed a lot of our problems but need further changes to get us where we want to be. Sunday should have proven that we need a lot more work and has laid our deficiencies bare for all to see. We ain't good enough just now but we are not a million miles away, we are in the best shape that we have been for the past few seasons and should improve further next season....but we are still pretty sh#te!
I would kill to be scrapping at the bottom of THAT league.

69.43 points by my calculations. So where we were. That said it there would have been more pressure on County if we’d been closer to them and who knows how it would have turned out.

Many good comments on this thread. Here's my initial reflections

    29.12 Alloa 2-1 United
    05.01 United 1-1 Partick
    23.02 Falkirk 1-1 United
    09.03 Partick 2-1 United
    30.03 United 1-2 QOS
    04.05 Morton 1-1 United

Interesting! So 5 points better off if RN had the team for the entire season, and therefore only 1 point behind County.
Guess that tells us that it would have been close but still no cigar.....which suggests we do still need to strengthen, which we already know!
So all in all, suggests on the right path and a good summer window should give us confidence as long as we start well!
I still have a feeling that a sports psychology session in pre season would help.
Consistently winning is as much in the head as it is on the pitch!
