The Don made his Notts debut vs. Darlingrad (we lost). Best £6k Notts ever spent?

Jimmy Sirrel taught the boys to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile

    Great business!

One of Billy Gray’s last acts as manager – the double signing of Don Masson and Bob Worthington for £7,000. Bob always joked that his fee was £500, so that makes the Don’s £6,500.

Both were key members of those first 3 magical seasons under Jimmy Sirrel, when we gained promotion twice. Bob only missing 3 games over that period and Don 7 games.

I thought it was less than that, £1,000 max and maybe just £600, hence Bob Worthington joking that he cost £500 of it.

I don't think Notts had £6,000 back then.

Having said that, I was a child at the time and only had my dad's word for it.

Post Guides say Richie Barker cost £10,000 in December 1968, Les Bradd came for ten times less than that a year before. No fee given for Masson, presumably because it was a joint price for the two players and no actual split figure was ever discussed.
